I am rebuilding an 18 ft center console boat. I replaced the transom with a full coverage stlye (no motor cutout) and intend on putting on an engine bracket. I measured the length of the previous transom and it appears that it was about 23 1/2 inches. It's hard to tell because it has all been replaced now. I have a 85 hp motor I bought with a 20 inch shaft. Will this be too short, especially since I will be putting the engin on a bracket, or can I just mount the bracket lower? Should the cavitation plate still be flush with the bottom of the hull or should I raise it a few inches because of the setback?

You are entering the 'trial and error' zone, not something that is black and white. Your hull was not made with a bracket installation in mind, therefore your balance (it's not set for placing the engine way back and will lift the nose causing it to feel too light, ESPECIALLY on a small lightweight boat like yours). Your hull bottom shape, degree of deadrise, the boat's balance point... all of this matters. You will not find a simple answer by inquiring around. What you'll get is someone guessing and since it is your time, energy, and expense and not theirs, I'd disregard anyone's input that hasn't done what you're doing, and to the exact same boat and engine combo. My advice? Don't waste any more time and money and go out and buy a properly rigged boat for your purpose. I say this because with what you're doing, it will never be right without spending countless hours, and dollars, to do it.
