I just bought a Yabbie blue and i put him in my tank where i previously had a brown one. My new Blue crayfish is turning brown... Why is this happening? is it a sign of something? or is it because the pebbles in the tank are brown and red? when i bought him he was bright blue and after 2 days he is pretty much all brown. Please send reply to Seanmounce@hotmail.com as i don't check here often.
ps i feed it sinking shrimp pellets, its a 10gallon tank with a filter waterfall for air.

hmmm
sounds weird, when i caught my Murray Cray he was light brown and after he malted which was around 8 months after i got him he had a bit of a new colour in his shell it had alot more blue and purple in it and his claw changed from the dirty look to pure shiney white,
i had a brown yabbie -(now dead, my cray got his revenge from a claw incedent a while ago)- that turned blue over a period of 3 months but i've never heard of it happening in a matter of days without malting, i suggest you wait for someone with a bit more crayfish knowlege to ansewer your question. sorry i couldnt help

Hi Sean, I know its been awhile since you asked the question why your blue yabby turned brown. I am a yabby lover and breeder. I would like to give you some insit as to why you yabby changed colour. As you were already told malting can cause a yabby to change colour this can happen either before as the outer shell is getting ready to shed or after a yabby has shedded if this is the case a yabby can often be a very light blue or a very bright blue but as the shell begins to harden which can take up to 5 days it may begin to change to a darker colour or as in your case change from one colour to another. So it could be possible that your yabby had very recrently shed before you purchased him. Another possilble factor is genetics, your yabby may have one brown parent one blue what can happen is a yabby will be blue then as it matures and becomes ready to reproduce it may change to a brown or green colour, after breeding or shedding again they might change back to a blueish colour which may have already noticed. Colouring of stones and gravel wont change your yabbies colour. Just make sure you have penty of stones for them to dig in and rocks or wood for them to hide under, wood is good as they will eat bacteria from it, however it can make the water turn brown. I have 4 tanks dedicated to yabbies, in 2 of them I have put lego pirateships. The lego looks good and you can make what you wish, the yabbies love hidding in it climbing on it.I hope this was of some help and if there is anything else you would like to know just ask..

It could also be because of stress. Usually the minimum tank size for a crayish is 20-30 gallons and you only have a 10 gallon tank. So you might want to consider that. It could also be that he doesn't like the food. Try giving him something like carrots, raw potatoes, lettuce, or frozen peas once in a while.

Hi. To I have just started out with yabbies, but my family enjoy eating them as well. As we get some from the wild. I saved a really littel one I found and have had it for a few months now. It is still brown. I was wondering how long it will take to turn blue. It was about 2cm when I got it, and is now about 8cm.

Oh, and to tell the difference between male and female. Females have a double set of legs. This is so they can carry their eggs.

it should take a month or more to get there colour.oh ya ty for the info im shure mines a female because female have kinda fat claws and males have long claws

While it probably will, it's possible your yabby may not change colour.
For sexing yab's, the female's have a wider tail and 2 little holes at the base of her 3rd set of legs. The males have 2 little appendages on their last pair of legs...like little doodies and ginies

bec posted 5/3/08 6:40 AM
males have red on the tip of their claws an females are blue it doesnt matter the thickness of the claw as this can be just a different breed of yaabie as i have 3 types an the males has quite a thick claw! an it really doesnt matter what size tank you have as long as its reasonable(not too small)yabies can live up to 5 years in captivity or maybe even longer as mine are 5 now an the size of a lobster. they feed of scraps of vegies an they love pellet fish food .
bec posted 5/3/08 6:43 AM
oh an i forgot to say yabbies do change colour if you dont have enough light for them or the because of the condition of the water.ieg dam yabbies are brown because of the brown water. river yabbies are usually blue in colour because of the clearity of the water
