Hey there. I am currently exploring the idea of starting a Koura (New Zealand freshwater crayfish) farm in New Zealand and i hear that it is similar to farming yabby. I would appreciate any advice anyone could give me. |

Crayfish farming. Before you get too excited, try keeping a few as pets, monitor your results, it is not at all easy and I know alot of people have been ripped off at many levels. Go to school, do aquaculture courses and commercial courses on business management. The geographical location of New Zealand is too far south to be commercially viable. Slow growth rates etc, however with a few skills and education you mat be able to speed up the process for growth. Kouri by nature are slow compared to australian cherax destructor. And cherax destructor would take over NZ in a very short time. Personally I don't like your chances of anything viable Dave http://www.crayfishworld.com/getsmart.htm |

check out some australian government sites like South Australian Primary Industries. they have fact sheets on farming yabbies. i found it by doing a google search. it even gives you farm gate prices and so forth. good luck |

My younger brother and I have a "stock" of koura for personal consumption, we give them some food every now and then, they seem to breed up at the same speed we eat them! |
