Hi! I live in Preble County ohio - today my son was wading in a creek and claimed to have seen an all black crayfish (no spots, no stripes, definitely black) with yellowish eyes. I've searched all over the net...does this species exist?? He swears it was not an insect but looked like a little lobster...

hi my name is dale from Wisconsin. There is no species that is pure black in Ohio. I could have been a dark brown, or perhaps a color morph. Color morphs are genetic flukes. A crayfish can be albino, or completely black which is the opposite color morph of an albino. You would have to catch the crayfish for a positive ID though

I to saw a completely black crayfish and also live in Southern Ohio...... I saw it about 23 years ago....it freaked me out as I had never seen anything but a white one(only once as well) and standard brownish with varied spots before...
