I looked around through the site to figure out this answer and haven't had any luck. Maybe someone can help me. I recently took in a crayfish as a pet from the local lake. Until he shed, he was fine. When he finally shed, I found him upside down numerous times. Since then, his claws haven't worked. He holds them underneath him. They hamper his walking and when he tries lifting them (which he didn't do until 2+ days after molting), it looks like he's punching himself in the face. He also has some feathery white things sticking out of his shell along the sides. This came after molting as well. Is there anything I should do? He seems to enjoy the fish food (goldfish flakes and bloodworms) scraps left over from the two small panfish in the tank (from the same lake, about the same size as the crayfish). Do I need to feed him anything else? |

Sounds like a rough shed. Many crayfish n=have rough sheds. Legs can be lost death can occur. Many time though they get through it. there isn't much that you can do. I have had one that got a leg stuck up into its shell .I pulled the leg out gently to solve that and mine was fine. With fuzzy looking part sticking out, it is not usually a problem. I had many with that and no deaths from it. It could be he just needs a few weeks for his claws to harden. Time will tell feed him , keep his tank clean and hope for the best. |

Contrary to "Conan", crayfish have difficulties with molting purely because the crayfish carer has "Messed UP". Simply put, a crayfish relies on you the carer to keep the water all sorted as they are cold blooded. Anyway I dare say the crayfish is no longer with us judging from the time of the initial post. http://www.crayfishmates.com crayfish forum |

i have pet crayfish. you should feed him every day a little bit of food. i feed my crayfish crab and lobster bites. they love them! a little can lasts at least 2 maybe 3 months. my crayfish never do that claw thing, maybe it's because they go in to hiding. crayfish hide when they molt because their shells are really soft. yours might not hide because their are no other crayfish he needs to worry about.the claws not being able move is probably because they are to weak for at least 3 days. also my crayfish has the same thing on his side. i don't know what it means though. it's probably some old shell stuck on him, or it's a growth defect. |
