Hey, if theres a euphoium (or even baritone) player reading this, maybe you can help me. Im currently having lots of trouble with an above the staff G. Its supposed to be 12 fingering, but i find that i can play it much easier use 2 valve. But useing 2 valve isnt very consistent since just a slight clip of the embosure raises it to an A. Any one know any tips to help me? Also, it might just be the horn. I am currently playing a Yamaha YEP 201 (a standard) but will upgrade to a 641 or maybe even a miraphone or willson. So if you think its just the horn, tell me that too. Please email replies, since im just posting this everywhere to try to get help.

It shouldn't be your horn. One thing
that you might find useful is playing
low range exercises. Once you have
a solid low range your high range will
come. Also, do NOT tighten up
when you play in the high register.
You should lift your tongue and use a
more steady airstream. On
euphonium you should use the 12
fingering, just 2nd valve is out of tune
on the instrument. I hope you find
this useful.

it's definately not the horn, it takes time to develop your range not something you want to rush, I did and now I'm working with Dr. Mary Ann Craig and correcting a lot of little things I've been doing wrong all these years. But if you're lookin for a good horn definately go for a Willson, you won't be disappointed....

Using the second valve is probably not the best idea. It's too easy to slip to the A, which could really mess up the piece you'd be playing. If you're having trouble with intonation, you might try using 3rd valve, which will lower the pitch, but you should practice with 1&2. Definitely take the advice of the other person who posted here, and practice the lower register. The airstream for the low stuff is what you need to really make the high stuff speak.
