We study Hedgehogs in some detail as we have up to 16 hedgehogs in our immediate vicinity. Now we like badgers but they are direct competitors for available food and may even be on on badger 'snack' list !How do we persuade this otherwise fine creature to go away and stat away ?We realise that is a non trivial task !: (Tim |

In answering your question 'difficult' comes to mind. As you say, hedgehogs can be on the badger's menu - they being one of the few creatures who can tackle the hedgehog as prey, ie. avoiding their spines. As hedgehogs are descreasing in population, then protecting them in any way we can is a good idea. It may mean erecting strong fencing in a particular way as to prevent badgers from entering, but which allows hedgehogs to come and go, eg. through a small 2-way gate or aperture which would be too small for a badger to use. I believe hedgehogs are fond of eating slugs (they used to come into my garden for them), whereas the slug I believe is not a favourite of the badger. In terms of competition for food then the two creatures should survive side by side.Preventing badgers from preying on the hedgehog in the wild though is more or less impossible - although badgers would probably not bother the hedgehog if their main dietry foodstuff is plentiful, ie. earthworms.Perhaps the best advice I can give in the immediate is that you contact your local/nearest badger protection group, or similar, for specific advice on your situation. I have included the URL to the Badger Trust website where you can obtain an up to date list of badger groups in the UK. Hope this helps in some way. http://www.badger.org.uk/content/Groups.asp Badger Trust |
