Hi I'm wondering if anyone who has hair loss has found that their serum ferritin was low as well. Mine was 28 when tested. Also, when your iron levels were raised to that "trigger point" (70 or higher) did the hair loss stop, say like after 2 or 3 months? Thanks :)

I have had sooooo many blood tests done and the docs never seem to find anything out of the norm with me. I have AA (alopecia totalis). I wish they could find some deficiency that I could try to fix and maybe grow hair back.

hi--honestly, my ferritin was very low--12. i fixed it over a year ago and haven't had any luck or turn around. i DO know that fising it normally should help, though--according to the doctors. But, mine is around 60 (my body just plateaued there--no matter how much iron i seem to take) and i've seen no turn around. just make sure you cover all your bases b/c there might be something on top of the iron problem. GOOD LUCK!!

I've been trying the iron, and one time I've had it up to 98 and my hair shed a lot less, but after 2 weeks it shed again. I assume it was the iron that gave me the good hair day, but also, 4 months before I took birth control pills given by my doctor to see if that would help my hair loss. But I only used them for 2 months and dropped them. Again, my iron is up (because it dropped) and my hair loss slowed for about 2 weeks and then shed again. A few months before I had stopped taking adalctone. So I don't know if the good hair loss was from the medication or the iron. I'm becoming skeptical that the iron will help. I mean me and my sister have hair loss and we both had low ferritin levels. My mom has low ferritin levels as well, but no hair loss. It's weird.I'm just sticking to the iron for now and see what comes out of it. If it gets better I'll let you all know :)

I posted a message 3 weeks ago which may be of interest to others but it hasn't appeared yet, so I am just testing before I repeat what I last said.

well this time it worked so I'll try to repeat what I last said - hope some of you ladies are still reading this site. I think I have spent most of my adult life iron deficient, my hair has been thinning for about 10 years but much worse in the last few. GP's just don't seem to care, they issue a prescription for iron tablets for a couple of months and don't even bother with a follow up blood test or maybe that just my GP. My ferritin was down to 12 and managed over 6 months to get it to 74. I was worried that level would start to drop once I stopped taking the iron tablets and did some research on net, found an article by Dr. Hugh Rushden, basically he says that shedding resumes once iron stores start to deplate again, he recommends 72mg of elemental iron per day for 3 months, thereafter dropping to 24mg or double this if non-meat eater or heavy periods, plus Vit C and B12 to absorb, and 1.5g of Lysine per day, as most women with hair loss and iron deficiency were also found to be deficient in Lysine. I started taking these supplements 3 weeks ago so it a bit early to comment but I think I can see a few tiny hairs starting, I would have dismissed them except that I used to have a small bald patch which was completely smooth and hair free to touch and now I can't quite find it - I hope I'm not imagining it - I will report back in month or so.

Hi, I'm a Clinical Nurse Specialist and author and although iron levels are important ... they are only part of the solution. You also need to control insulin levels. You can find more info at www.lovenewhair.com Ask for a discount ... they will supply

Laser light therapy appears to be the most promising approach for female hair loss. The results are far more impressive than minoxidil. You can find out more information at www.lovenewhair.com
