During National Service I spent time as station ground crew at RAF Aldergrove Northern Ireland. At that time 202 Sqdn flew HP Hastings. A delightful aircraft to work on and to fly in. Week-end flights to Langar RCAF got me home on leave. |

Further to my earlier information. The little grey cells have been stiring,No 202 sdn. used the Hastings for Meterogical flights from Aldergrove but seconded for troop carrying during Suez campaign. Replaced by a Canberra. 202 now flies rescue helicopters. Hastings C2's were aquired by 70 sqdn. in 1956 based in Cyprus and continued until 1968. No. 70 had the white "LXX' numerals on a black diamond displayed on the fin just above the aircraft number. This was removed when the Sdn. returned to the UK in 1975. The aircraft was introduced into No. 47 sqn in 1948 and was used in the Berlin Air Lift which ended in 1949. Besides being used by Transport Command on its main passenger routes to the Middle and Far East, it was also used by the airborne forces as a paratroop and supply-dropper. |
