Hello!Just diagnosed with MVP on Jan. 16.After a trip to the ER with palpitations in December, Dr ordered a rash of tests on heart and stomach. Found MVP, GERD and hiatal hernia.Wanted to know if anyone else with MVP feels like their heart stops beating for a few seconds and then starts again. When this happens, I feel like I get a "loss in cabin pressure". Like everything stops working and my body is going to shut down. Once my heart starts again, I feel normal. This really happens a lot before and during my period. Had holter & echo. both were normal except the MVP.Please let me know if anyone else has the "heart stopping" so I don't think i'm crazy. This diagnosis has me reading every book and internet sight to try to find out more! Thanks

Hi Sue, So sorry you're having troubles with MVP. I know what you mean... I used to tell people I felt like somebody "pulled my plug" and I was going down! (though I've never fainted).Well, I guess I sound like a broken record by this time, but giving up caffeine & sugar will really, really help. Doctors won't tell you this....in fact, I have doubts if studying "diet" is even included in med school. I had a doctor tell me (in the early 80's) "4 cups of coffee a day is nothing." Wrong, wrong, wrong. Please try it -- decaf coffee is not that bad. And you can get decaf Coca-Cola. It seems like it takes a few months to completely clean caffeiene out of your system, so don't give up too soon. Best of luck, and hope you're feeling better.

My Dr told me caffiene is a big NoNo. I really didn't drink that much coffee, except an occasional starbucks. My big downfall is chocolate, although I've heard that white chocolate contains no caffiene. Bought caffiene free pepsi...it tastes the same to me. I read on one site that there is a big difference between drinks that are "Caffiene Free" and "Decaffienated"...unless it says caffiene free, there is a trace of caffiene.

Sue -I wish this wasn't such an old message because I have mvp ("slight") they say and I have the heart stopping feeling as well and now that I look back on it it is during my period ... how weird ... wonder what that means and what I can do about it ... it's driving me crazy!

Sue/Judy:You don't know how happy I am to read what you both wrote. Since Feb. '07 I have had these attacks and the first feeling is dizziness and I notice my heartbeat slowing down. It feels like my entire body is going to stop. My general doctor and therapist were telling me it was panic attacks. Months later I'm not on an Event Monitor to 'catch' the MVP. I had an echocardiogram, stress test, about 20 EKGs....I've been to the ER 11 times and by the time I got there the feeling had passed.I am SO relieved to know I'm not the only person out there with this weird feeling. It makes you so paranoid! I do have slight MVP and am happy to know that it's common.I get it about every 4 weeks. I'm going to see if it's related to my monthly cycle...I also LOVE sugar/chocolate. I've cut out caffeine but I definitely haven't cut out sweets.I'm so happy I found this site.

Amy, I'm really glad you are feeling better!!! :-) I can't stop encouraging people to give up caffeine and sugar. Today, I went to the dentist and they informed me I no longer needed to take "pre-med" before a cleaning, because MVP has been deemed an "electrical" problem vs. a "mechanical" problem (i.e., it is not a birth defect, it is what YOU put into your system). I told them I already knew that, because giving up coffee helped me SOOOOO much. Yeah, coffee, Coca-cola & chocolate are all yummy & pleasant, but isn't it more important to feel great????
