I have MVP and have to take antibiotics when I go to the dentist. For the past 3 months I've suffered from an anal fissure. I've gone to the doctor who basically did nothing for me. Most days when I have a bowel movement it bleeds a lot. My question is should I be on antibiotics to prevent infection? |

I'm not an MD, but I don't think the antibiotics & MVP are connected. If you only have to take the antibiotics every six months, that's not much. I recommend taking a magnesium supplement every day - it acts as a mild "stool softener." Magnesium has also been known to relieve MVP symptoms!!! Best of luck. |

Hi there.i've read on several MVP sites that antibiotics should be taken prior to going to the dentist, as MVP makes you more susceptible to a valve infection - what can be very serious. |

My dentist recently told me (Aug. 07) that taking antibiotics for MVP is no longer necessary. That is not surprising. Recent studies show that MVP is not a "structural" problem... it is more of an "electrical" problem... WHICH MEANS... we have better control of it that we think, and it is NOT hopeless. Just chuck the sugar and caffeine, and life will improve tremendously. Nothing is wrong with your heart valve. Palipitations, irregular heartbeat, etc. are coming from what WE choose to put into our body. |

find it strange that you act as if MVP is only caused by what we put into our bodies. Not only have I read that it can be hereditary, but I am a witness to it, because my dad, niece and myself have all been diagnosed with it (and we don't eat the same things). It seems that it is more to it than just what we eat, but it will help to eat right. |

Well, that very well may be. But I remember being so hideously miserable for 20 years, I would have danced in the street with a lampshade on my head, knowing if I just changed my diet I would feel 95% better. Maybe diet (coffee, etc.) doesn't affect everybody, but isn't it worth a try?!?! |
