When we came home from Nam most people didn't want to know where we had been or what it was like. But we had a strong Army behind us, OUR FAMLIES.
My Mom,Dad,Brother and Sister were strong supporters for all of us.
My Mom told me this story some time after I had come home. One day she was sitting in her chair by the front window. An Army sedan pulled up in front of the house with two officers in it. She said she just about died. They sat in the car for awhile then finally got out. They straightened their jackets and caps. The whole time Mom was saying over and over, Dear God no please no. The officers then walked across the street to App's Hardware store. As a parent and grandparent myself I can only imagine the sickning fear that she went thru that day. She said she just sat there and cried with relief but also in pain for the other Mothers who did get such a visit telling them their son was killed in action.
I believe our families fought that war with us in their own way. They fought it with prayers and stood tall for all of us.
My Mom died recently on Feb. 20, 2008 at 6:46PM. She was born on December 25, 1908 and lived 99 years 1 month and 25 days. My brother, sister and I lost a great Mom and all of us lost a strong woman who stood tall for all of us. God Bless you Mom from all of us.

Amen, sorry about your loss, also. I lost my mom last year. She was a true patriot and a vet of WWII. She is buried with my father at Arlington National. I think the famalies are often overlooked in every war. I thank god my son grew up in peaceful times and I did not have to be the one at home wondering of his safety.

I loSt my fater, just two years ago, I miss him greatly. He was WWII Vet, and the ONLY one who really understood what I had been through. I too am very thankful that my son did not have to go through what we did. Thank God for my family and my Vet friends who have always stood beside me, and continue to make me feel good about what we did. And to the young men and women who are serving our country today, I say from the bottom of my heart "THANKS"

While I was in Vietnam 67-68 one of my brothers was station in Thailand in the air force. Another brother was on an aircraft carrier in the gulf. I was lucky enough to visit my brother in Thailand. I could not get to see my other brother. My mother was very special and very proud.she had three stars in the window. One for each of us. Luckily we all made it back home. The family was very important at that time in history. A lot of the draft dodgers and other were not very kind to the returning Vets. We found comfort from our mother and the rest of the family.
I agree that the families have a lot to with our being and being able to cope with returning from the war.

Sorry about your loss. There are better times ahead and great memories of a loved one to remember. It is not easy going when a mother or father passes on. I am sure at the age of 99 that she gave you many years to remember and cherish . Please accept my condolences.
