Totally Outrageous Challenge
October 10, 2003.
The William G. Bennett Memorial Fly-In will honor Bill Bennett and the TOC in an exhibit of appreciation.
On December 22nd, the hobby industry suffered the loss of William G. "Bill" Bennett, a true promoter of radio control model airplane flying and a friend to all those who shared his love of the sport.
Bill Bennett was well known as a very adept businessman and entrepreneur, but he was also a great philanthropist. He gave millions of dollars to education, and he was also a great supporter of our hobby. The most shining example of this is the Tournament Of Champions, often referred to as the "TOC." The TOC was the definitive international modeling event, a world class competition and an exhibition of skill that repeatedly brought the world's most gifted aerobatic RC pilots to Las Vegas.
Mr. Bennett's absence is felt by all those who knew him, and by those who didn't know him through his accomplishments like the TOC. On behalf of Hobby Merchandiser and all of us involved with HobbyVisions International, I extend my deepest condolences to the Bennett family and friends.
In honor of Bill Bennett and his steadfast support of our industry all these years, the William G. Bennett Memorial Fly-in will be held on Friday October 10, 2003, during the inaugural running of the new HobbyVisions International trade show.
At HobbyVisions, we believe that fun is the driving force that motivates people to get involved in radio control. Nothing can grow our industry more than extending an offer of exciting fun that can be shared with and participated in by one and all. In a spectacular fun fly thatŐs totally inclusive in nature and spirit, and right in line with Mr. Bennett's desire grow this industry, HobbyVisions International will host an all new TOC, the "Totally Outrageous Challenge."
This one-day RC extravaganza will feature the best fliers from around the world as they compete in events like Free-Form, 3-D and Fun-Fly for a cash and prize purse of $15,000. We feel that this type of event will not only be compelling for the spectator but will also inspire potential newcomers, so that they, too, can join in on the radio control fun our sport has to offer.
The Totally Outrageous Challenge will be held on Friday during the HobbyVisions show, and will include show team exhibitions during intermission. I will also be present, sport flying with all kinds of model designs all day long.
Of course, the DIY cameras will be there to document the occasion for a one-hour television special about HobbyVisions International that will air for DIY's domestic and international audiences. What better way to thank Bill Bennett than to document a fun filled day of RC flying in his name in Las Vegas, the greatest fun-city on Earth! The Las Vegas R/C Club has been gracious in offering their field for this memorial event, as has Bill Rickard, who will fill the position of air show coordinator.
We invite one and all, young and old, girls and boys, men and women, grandfathers and grandmothers, novice flyers and experts alike to come and experience the fun and festivities of RC flying in the Las Vegas sunshine as we honor William G. Bennett, one of the greatest proponents of radio control model airplane flying that the world has ever known.
