We have a male papillon that's now 19 months old. We've had him since he was 3 mo and he a wonderful dog except he refuses to use the bathroom outside. He'll be outside for hours and still come inside to use the bathroom. We also have a 4 mo old lab and he's already almost completely housebroken so we must be doing something right. Does anyone have any ideas about how we can get him to go outside??? We've tried praising and tricks and walks but nothing is working and my husband is about ready to kick him out. PLEASE HELP

We have a nine month old, was never house trained. The breeder said that he was paper trained, but I'm thinking that he wasn't. He refused to go outside at all the first few days... after a couple of days we just started taking him out every half hour that we were home and keeping him in his crate the rest of the time. We also would be outside for only a few minutes at a time so that he stay focused on the task at hand. It seems to be working, he finally started peeing outside and we've only had about one accident a day, sometimes none. Hope that helps... there is hope!

I have a 6 month old Papillon. Same problem. Goes outside and comes in and does her job. She is crate trained so there is no problem while I am not home. While at home, I spend more time outside watching her than I do inside. It is getting better. She has me trained. Another problem, she will not stay outside by herself. If I go in the house she barks and yelps at the door. Anyone got any suggestions on that one?

When going outside for bathroom purposes when house training- that should be the only thing that goes on. Even if yard is fenced in take him outside on a leash- when dog does his thing cheer the heck out of him and then go directly back inside. If you want your dog to have some play time wait a little bit and then let him back out to play.
