So here I am again, posting a new topic, because I am bored of all the rest. This topic is made just so you can talk about weird stuff, that you could say, What wit dat, about. I don't know what the British version of "What wit dat" is but I'm sure it is much more dignified. Because the English are dignified. Or you can say anything that you want.
So yeah, it snowed 3 days ago. In April. What wit dat?
Dark Death Dude posted 4/14/03 3:16 PM
Or like how just one week later it's supposed to be 80 dagrees?

We'd probably say "what's that all about?" or "what's the story there?" the usual response to which would be "buggered if I know" or "search me, mate" :-)
Dark Death Dude posted 4/16/03 10:38 PM
It's supposed to drop to the fiftys tomorrow. So what's up with that?

Hottest day of the year here in London
Darth Tine posted 4/18/03 0:47 AM
I thought that you lived in Essex, or is that just Aims? How hot did it get?
Ok, here's something weird, Why do we call Baseball's championship games, "the World Series", when only Canada and the US can play in it? Must be our American Arrogance
(The Cubs are going ALL! THE! WAY!)(Sorry)
Da Wookie posted 4/18/03 6:17 PM
And why do the Cubs stink so bad even though the PITCHER hits Home Runs? I mean, come on! We are one of the better teams in the league, but we still lose when it comes to the end. But HOLY COW! IS THIS THE YEAR?

Aims lives in Essex and I grew up there but am presently living in London where I'm reading Politics at the University of Greenwich. I still have family and friends in Essex, including my best friend, who is engaged to Aims' best friend - that's how Aims and I met. I'll probably be moving back there later this year after I graduate. I can't remember exactly how hot it was in London. It wouldn't be hot by American standards but for us Brits it was a pretty hot day. It's a very quintessential British trait that as soon as the sun comes out, even if it isn't very hot, we all have barbecues. We have so little summer that the tiniest bit of sunshine is a cause for great excitement.
Dark Death Dude posted 4/19/03 9:52 PM
Exactly how many days of summer do you have?
Grand Moff Andy posted 4/20/03 4:13 PM     Click here to send email to Grand Moff Andy
Well, Britain has a variable climate that changes from day to day, which means it is difficult to predict.
We have what's called an 'equable climate' which means that extreme weather is rare. Of course we have the different seasons - spring, summer, autumn, winter but Britain has different weather North, South, East and West:
NW - cool summers, mild winters, heavy rain
NE - cool summers, cool winters, relatively dry all year
SE (where I live) - warm summers, cold winters, some rain all year especially summer
SW - warm summers, mild winters, rain all year especially winter. I think the reason for this is because different air masses come from each direction:
North - Arctic very cold
East - Continental from Europe and Asia
South - Tropical warm
West - Maritime air has crossed Atlantic bringing wet weather. We're an island of contrasts :-)
iloveyouiknow posted 4/23/03 11:21 PM
In the Chicago area it's almost the opposite. We have ONLY extreme weather. And it varies - not by area, it just varies. I have seen beautiful blue skies pour rain within a matter of a half hour. If your read this threads earlier post youll see how we had 80 degree weather turn into snow overnight.
The quick changes make it so that you always can tell when someone hasnt grown up around here. At school it can get pretty hilarious watching all the people who got up to the brisk coolness at 8:00 sweat in the afternoon as the sun just bakes 'em.

Well, in Britain we live with the daily reality of 'Sod's Law'. Basically, if you leave the house in a big overcoat and a scarf, carrying an unbrella, you can bet your life it'll be boiling all day without a drop of rain but the minute you decide to chance it and go out in nothing but a T-shirt and a pair of shorts you'll get caught in a torrential downpour, soaked through to the skin and spend the rest of the week sneezing in fits with neumonia and eating chicken soup!

Our weather does have somewhat of a pattern. Cool, wet and rainy spring and fall, almost unberable heat and humidity in the summer, a chilly and snowy winter that is all right untill you get to Febuary. Then it gets to be very tiresome, and you pray for some sign, ANY sign! that spring is coming. And then in March... It comes, and you can go outside with a T-shirt and play football(real football not that euoropean stuff) and revel in the beauty of spring! And then the next day... it snows. and snows. Our seasons are very cruel.

I can't believe we're actually discussing the weather! We're now officially the saddest people on Earth!

Was that an echo? No, not personally, but I spoke to Aims' best mate (who is my best mate's fiancee) the other day, they both took me out to dinner for my birthday, bless 'em, and she told me that Aims is fine. Having a great time I'm sure, making the most of it.
Dark Death Dude posted 5/1/03 2:56 PM
Why hasn't Aims talked to you? Is she too good for you?

Happy Birthday! When was it? Are you 21 now or 22?
Grand Moff Andy posted 5/6/03 4:51 AM     Click here to send email to Grand Moff Andy
Thank you. I am 21 - Gosh! Can't believe I've been here [at uni] so long! Oh well, nearly finished. Sitting my final exams next week (eek!). Shall be glad when it's all over but it will mean I'm going to have to join the rat race and get a job like everybody else (d'oh!), not to mention driving lessons, find a place to live, etc. It's Aims' birthday on the 8th but I won't be seeing her until August - we're going away for the weekend - a holiday at last!

You Punk!!!!!! You've got final exams next week?!?!?!? Life is not fair!!! I'm on my mid-term!!! I hate the quarter system, every other college is on the semester. But not mine. Anyway, why do you need driving lessons? Can't you drive?
Grand Moff Andy posted 5/7/03 2:18 PM     Click here to send email to Grand Moff Andy
Well d'uh! I'd be a bit stupid getting driving lessons if I COULD drive. So, what are you studying and where?
Dark Death dude posted 5/7/03 4:53 PM
I'm ahome-schooled(for now)
Grand Moff Andy posted 5/7/03 8:14 PM     Click here to send email to Grand Moff Andy
Home-schooled? What's that? You're taught at home? In England you either go to state school or, if your parents are mega-bucks rich, a public school (which includes Church of England and Roman Catholic schools, most boarding). I think a few people are home-schooling their children now though because of the problems with our state schooling system and the expense of public and CofE schools - but it remains relatively rare.
Darth Tine posted 5/7/03 9:44 PM     Click here to send email to Darth Tine
Yeah, it means that we are schooled at home. Mom just buys the books and teaches us out of them. I used to get up at 8 and be done before noon. Are you jealous yet? Home-schooling is getting to be more poplular in the US. I know bunches of people who do it. You get four choices here, public school which is paid for by the tax-payers, even if you don't have a child in the school, Private which there is a fee for, and boarding schools which is not very popular. People only send their kids to boarding school if the kids are troublemakers.
Currently, I am going to the very prestigious (ha.ha.) College of DuPage. It's only a 2 year community college, and people only go there to save money. It's only claim to fame is the fact that it is the largest single campus community college in the nation, with 30,000 to 35,000 students. Right now, I'm major-less and am taking Speech 100 and Computer Info Systems 100.
Grand Moff Andy posted 5/8/03 1:34 AM     Click here to send email to Grand Moff Andy
Yeh, that's the same as our system except that we call our private schools public schools and our public schools state schools and we also have religious schools, which are really just public (private) schools with the same expensive education but with the fear of God thrown in for good measure! If I had children, I'd definately send them to a CofE school.
iloveyouiknow posted 5/9/03 7:44 PM
CofE school? is that where you go to learn the art of mocha?
Darth Tine posted 5/11/03 1:47 AM
Sweet! Forget this college stuff, it's to hard, I'm gonna go to a cofE school instead! Learning how to make coffee sounds extremly good right now. Anything to get away from school.
Grand Moff Andy posted 5/11/03 12:51 AM     Click here to send email to Grand Moff Andy
Hmmm, I hope you have a passion for theology and divinity then. I'm afraid there's unlikely to be much in the way of coffee - it's probably a sin or something, most things are. You can decide whether you'd prefer an Anglican or a Roman Catholic religious school. I think the basic difference is that the Anglicans emphasise "Do good and you shall go to Heaven" and the Roman Catholics emphasise "Do evil and you shall burn for all eternity in the flames of Hell, ye Godless heathen!!"
Sorry, typical Prody propaganda. I always see the Catholics as a tad more negative.
iloveyouiknow posted 5/12/03 8:33 PM
whats CofE stand for then? So your saying it's the same thing as a private(your public) school?
Grand Moff Andy posted 5/12/03 11:05 PM     Click here to send email to Grand Moff Andy
CofE is Church of England, you doughnut! I thought everyone knew that. Yes, public schools in England are what you would call 'private' schools. That's mainly because 'public' schools came before our state schools - before there was any kind of comprehensive education system in Great Britain. It's confusing, I know.
Dark Death Dude posted 5/14/03 2:11 AM
I didn't understand that at all. how fascinating!
Grand Moff Andy posted 5/14/03 7:16 PM     Click here to send email to Grand Moff Andy
It is very interesting. I did a presentation on it last year for my degree. Most 'public' schools were set up with endowments for the poor but were later hijacked as fee-paying schools. For more information, if you're interested, see http://education.guardian.co.uk/specialreports/educationincrisis/story/0,5500,144359,00.html for a brilliant run down of this great government plot!

I think it's some kind of horrible illness. Obviously not catching though :-)

You have my sympathy. Such an affliction must be difficult to live with. Trials happen to the best of us. And speaking of Bob....:)
