I figured, since we end up talking about each others strange country anyway, we should just give up trying to wrap it up in a disguise. Pretending that the topic has something to do with Star Wars, when it usually doesn't. So.... Andy, soccer season started yet? You do have soccer seasons, right?

I would like to point out that this forum should have been titled 'yanks and brits' but Darth Tine, Lady of the Diccionary has so endowed herself upon webster's book that she has to say it in alphabetical order. (in other words she's a moron)

We call it football. What you call football, we call 'American' football. I'm not in the least bit interested in football - or sport generally (although I watch tennis if it's on). I hope this isn't going to be another attempt at Brit bashing because you know I can bash back - and, as I think we established, some people on this forum don't take too kindly to it.

To clarify what ILYIK was saying, this is not called a forum, its called a thread. The replies to the thread are called posts. The forum is everything as a whole. Some Forums have additional parts to it, which are called boards. They subdivide the large forum into certain topics. So the order would be like this: Forum Boards Threads Posts Since ILYIK doesn't seem to understand this, it makes him a certified, grade A... NIMROD! (and me as well for making such a big deal out of this) j/k! ;)

In Darth Tine's absence I took the liberty of looking up the definition of Nimrod Nimrod: In the Bible, a mighty hunter and king of Shinar who was a grandson of Ham and a great-grandson of Noah. So, according to Derris, I am a king and a hunter. (which doesn't bode well for you my yound idiot...)

nim·rod n. also Nimrod A hunter. Informal A person regarded as silly, foolish, or stupid. Sorry to burst your bubble, but it's actually quite good word-use on his part. Not that I'm saying I agree with the sentiments behind it :-)

Sheesh! I can't go away for a measly little weekend without you guys squabling over something. It is obvious that my continued presence at this forum(or whatever) is required to in order to keep the peace. So now that i've established the fact that I am indespensible, I would like to say a few things. First, Gregory, I am not a moron. But since you will undoubtably continue to believe that I am, You are a maroon. Which is twice as bad as a moron because not only are you stupid, but you are purpleish reddish as well. GMA, You are only the second European person that I know who doesn't like soccer. Good for you. And I didn't start this forum for country bashing and anyone who does so is just plain mean. Derris, for once, I agree with you, ILYK is a nimrod. But since the "offical" definition of nimrod is "Hunter" I think that Nincompoop describes him better. nim.rod \'nim-,rad\n : HUNTER nin.com.poop \'nin-kem-,pup\n : FOOL, SIMPLETON

Hello everyone. I just want to say, Andy. If your mum likes the states even after going to New York and Florida, then I think she must be able to ignore things that are just plain evil. if she wants to see a world class city, she would have to come to Chicago and see what real America is like. Go Cubs!!

If you've only been to those states, no wonder you make fun of Americans! Everyone knows that the mid-west is where it's at. You should tell your mom to visit around here. All in all though, I'm impressed. I for one, have never been outside of my own country(except Canada which doesn't count) You on the other hand are Mr. world traveler! What other countries have you been to, and did you like them? Bye the way, I got my definition of Nincompoop from Merriam-Webster's desk dictionary. I don't know who Merriam is, but everone knows that Webster is very credible. And nincompoop might be more of an American word instead of a British one, which would explain why it isn't in the Oxford.

I'm glad that everyone is so interested in my travels. I have visited France, Germany, the Irish Republic, Malta, Spain and the United States. I have also visited Wales (where I have family). I don't really consider myself 'well-travelled' though. I enjoyed visiting some of these places but do not generally like travelling and have not been abroad in three years (although I am scheduled for a trip to Gran Canaria in July). I despise almost every mode of transport that exists bar walking and suffer terribly from home-sickness when abroad. It may sound corny but I just miss Britain too much when I'm away. I can't stand the hot weather and miss the English drizzle. I suppose I'm a bit of a 'Little Englander'. Despite all these countries I've visited the BEST holiday I've ever had in my life was a week-long stay in a small country cottage in Staffordshire. I've never been so relaxed. I'm usualled wired and irritable on foreign holidays. I am not an avid swimmer and on my last holiday I managed to spend two weeks in Tenerife without even dipping my toe in either the swimming pool or the sea. I also made quite a stir by marching into the reception of the hotel, before we'd even unloaded our bags from the car, and damanding that they replaced the Union Flag (or Union Jack), which was dirty and torn, flying on a pole outside their front entrance. I was polite at first but became increasinly annoyed as I had to ask several times (I complained a total of 9 times -- visiting reception 3 times a day having checked to see if they'd done it or upon noticing that they hadn't when leaving or returning). I was told by another member of staff, most of whom I got on with (I think they saw me as a loveable English eccentric), that that particular Union Flag had hung there for over three YEARS without ever having been replaced by the management. It was replaced with a brand new one three DAYS after I arrived!

What can I say? I am, indeed, a very eccentric character. Both Gran Canaria and Tenerife are both among the Canary Islands, Spanish islands off the coat of Morocco. Although, as I think of it, it was Lanzarote not Tenerife. My family has a holiday home in Lanzarote (also a Canary Island). One country I would like to visit is Canada (which, by the way, most certainly DOES count!)

It counts for you because you live a whole ocean away from it. For us though, all you have to do is drive far enough north and suddenly....Boom! your in Canada. Not too different from where you just left. Except that some people speak French, and the money has a picture of some lady on it.;) Is your family really rich or something? A house in the Canary islands? You are starting to sound offlie preppie.

No, not particularly. My dad's an auto-mechanic, specialising in prestige cars (Mercedes, BMW, Bentley, Rolls Royce, etc.), so he makes quite good money. My dad's side of the family have always been quite wealthy (my paternal great-great-grandfather went over to Africa with Cecil Rhodes and sent back diamonds) but we're not aristocracy and much of the money's run out now. Our family's well-known in our locality but we're really small time. My mum's side of the family is largely impoverished Welsh farmers. Although there is an obscure connection to Earl Kitchener of Khartoum (my maternal great-great-grandfather). Do you know who that is?

Ummmm... Let me guess....He worked in a kitchen? ;) So, I have no idea who it is. You may feel free to enlighten me if you wish. You still sound rich. I mean the whole fact that your family can afford to have a house on some island somewhere, or that you can even afford to have a SECOND house period, means you are rich. But I guess thats not so bad.

Oh gosh, it's not a 'second house', it's just a timeshare! Hundreds of people have timeshares. Sorry, that was my fault, didn't make that very clear. As you may have guessed, I fully intend to bore you with the details of my only really famous relative. Horatio Herbert Kitchener was born in Ireland. He joined the Army in 1868 attending the Royal Academy at Woolwich. Royal Engineers = conducted extensive surveys in Palestine and Cyprus. Became Governor-General of E. Sudan 1886. C-in-C Eygptian Army 1892-8, commanded victorious forces at Battle of Omdurman 1898. C-in-C S. Africa, Boer War (1900-1) as Viscount Kitchener. Became Field Marshal 1909 and created 1st Earl 1914. Prime Minister H. H. Asquith appointed him Secretary for War in 1914 and he became a symbol of the British war effort, famously immortalised in the famous poster of Kitchener, walrus moustache and all, pointing at the viewer. Drowned aboard the cruiser HMS Sheffield, which hit a mine off the Orkneys, while heading on a mission to keep Russia in the war in 1917.

Well, I'm probably being a little unfair. It wasn't that he was a 'bad' man but some of his actions were a bit dubious. For instance, he invented the concentration camp - to hold prisoners during the Boer War. Unfortunately the conditions were very bad and when the Boers attacked British supply lines a good many of them starved to death. He was also famously ferocious in battle and had a habit of slaughtering his opponents. Not one for taking prisoners. Winston Churchill, the man who advocated gassing the Kurds, despised him and thought he was a butcher. He was, nevertheless, a legend in his time and an invaluable asset in wartime.

Where to start....I only just got onto this...hang on...*scrolling*...thread...terminology now!!...and there is all sorts of madness going on!! For a start Brits & Yanks is obviously right cause it is alphabetical and also, who was first? Trillion, billion thing...refer to the cronology of whofounded your country - fleeing brits...now who can't count...in a way yes I did just shoot myself in the foot! Think about it! Shall I continue...? A timeshare...you pay so much money a year to 'invest' in property, or in some case you just pay a large lump i think...then you basically have an allocation of 'time' to spend in the villa/home. Yes you can swap between villas around the world depending on the company most likely...and no I don't have one...nor do my rents...though they nearly got one when I was about 6 I think. That was quite fun. I'm sure there are many hole in what I just typed but hey whatever. Oh and football is mostdefinatly the game where you kick the ball for 90 min! I don't really follow it all that much, will watch most sport though, but I prefer playing Hockey - old style not ice, never tried it. I can understand what you are saying GMA about good old home. It's nice to get back to every so often isnt it. But I like traveling too. I've never been to America but I have been to Banf in Canada. Nice place, we hit a cold snap over christmas, -40 degrees celcius. Nice!! My dad would breathe out and his moustash would freeze! hehe! Do I like StarWars...?...yup...I guess I do...I called my cat YODA. Tis True. I'm not as well informed on it as you guys though. I've seen ep:1 and The Jedi Returns and a bit of the Empire Strikes Back. Good films. Not read any of the book yet though. Aims says some of them aren't to good, the follow on ones. I was more of a manga fan through my CGSE's and A levels. Mostly Gundam, Cowboy Bebop, Dragon ball, stuf like that, was about all we got on TV over here. So I guess I must be doing something right to have found Aims if I'm not such a huge fan of Starwars hu! Well so she keeps telling me. We talked about it a bit at the beginging but it just doesn't really come into conversation at the mo. Ah well hey. There you go DT. Aims didn't like my mangled hand. But she did seem to forget it was damaged everynow and then and tug it or bash it...hehe...it was kinda funny even if it was a little painful some of the time...;> All in all I had a great weekend. Thank you Aims. The we drove back. It took us about 9/10 hours. We stopped in Lester to meet my mates family, it was his car, and then we drove home. It was my first piece of driving since I broke my hand. Was a nice feeling. I feel more road trips coming on...Aims... A timeshare: You have a resort with lots of apartments on it and for each apartment you have 52 weeks (in a year). Then you sell 52 'shares' in each apartment. So, for example, if you buy week No. 3, each year on week No. 3 that apartment belongs to you.
