Namibia is a member-state of the Commonwealth, so I'm assuming they speak good English. I don't know what the native dialect is though. Aims?

Actually, as I check my really rather splendidly detailed atlas, the Namibians speak English, Afrikaans (of course) and tribal languages. So, there you are. No French I'm afraid. Obviously some of the old colonies of the former French Empire do still speak French (such as Burkina Faso, Chad, Comoros, Congo, Madagascar, Senegal, Togo, Tunisia, and others). Namibia, however, is a former colony of the British Empire. Don't you just love us Europeans? We've been everywhere!

There's an element of truth to both sides. Namibia was discovered by the Portuguese in the late 15th-C., but apart from naming some places showed little interest. In 1793, Cape Dutch claimed 'Walvisbaal', a claim which was ceded to the British two years later. However, the British Colonial Office at the time considered the outpost not worth the expense. English and German missionaries took up their activities in the 1830s and 40s respectively and the British declared Walvis Bay a British possession in 1878. German missionaries first became active in the area in the 1840s. In 1883 a German businessman named A.E. Luederitz acquired a land concession at Angra Pequena and in 1884 the Germans declared a protectorate, which at the Berlin Conference of 1885 was extended to cover the core of what is Namibia today, leaving out the exclave of Walvisbaai on which Britain produced an older claim. The protectorate/colony was called Deutsch-Suedwestafrika (German South West Africa). In 1890 German minister of foreign affairs Caprivi acquired (from Britain) a stretch of land along the Angolan-Bechuana border, the Caprivi Strip, to give German South West Africa access to the Zambezi river. In 1903, the Nama (also referred to as Hottentots) rose in revolt, under their leader Hendrik Witbooi. In 1904 the Herero Revolt broke out. The German military crushed it mercilessly, driving the Herero into the Kalahari desert (i.e. across the border into British Bechuanaland), where about 80% of them perished. World War I broke out in 1914; in 1915 German South West Africa was occupied by South African forces. The League of nations in 1920 officially granted the Union of South Africa a mandate to administrate the former German colony. In 1919 the Caprivi Strip was reintegrated into British Bechuanaland and in 1926 a Legislative Assembly was established. I can see how my earlier comments were misleading but it was this, albeit tacit, British connection that Namibia joined the Commonwealth in 1990.

What do you do with all that knowledge? Does it just rattle around in your brain for the rest of your life? Or do you actually forget stuff like normal people? I bet with a memory like that you get a 4.0 in college. That just makes me sick.

Not bein funny, but I'll probably forget more than any of you will ever know but, my poor little head is full mainly of useless cr@p! Academically, I aint a high achiever (I'm probably gonna get a 2:1 for this degree). Blah blah. I'm too drunk to type this. Speak later. In answer, yeh, it pretty much is just rattlin around in my head. I'm quite a smart guy really - just a bit of a bum-head wen it comes to exams.... hmmm, and girls. Oh, yeh, and life in general. Yes, hello. This is me sobre. Sorry about that. That was my last day at university and I was really very, very drunk! I've been sick as a dog all day today and was out drinking again tonight (!). My little brother's in a band and he had a gig. Apparenly I said I'd go but I don't remember (£6 on the door!!). Anway, it was quite good - considering it was grunge - Was kinda 'pull a kiddie night' but other than that it was ok.

No, I have 2 brothers. Chris is the youngest(15). He's in a band called 'Drawn To Scale'. I have a 2nd brother, Ben (18), who is even more 'grungie' than Chris. He has long dreadlocks and both wear baggy clothes, etc. Ben's very artistic and interested in music & film. He was in a band too but they split and he's trying to get into/start another. As you can imagine, they don't identify much with their elder brother the politician but I am also quite artistic and, although not very musical (and certainly not a fan of their kind of music), I do have some interesting conversations with Ben about film, which has been a lifelong passion of mine. I'm quite the 'movie buff' but I think Ben's probably a better actor than I ever was and, besides, I've long since given up acting and haven't been on stage for about 3 years. Politics is all I'm about nowadays.

I noticed. :) But that's cool, everyone likes different things. I, for instance, like reading and History, so some people call me "uncolorful". That's you Gregory. I'm glad that you get along with your brothers(I'm asumming) most people don't. So, since you don't dress like your brothers, are you a pretty clean cut guy then?

|
Grand Moff Andy

You could say that. I am clean cut in that I'm a lover of simplicity and functionality. I am and have always been indifferent to my appearence. I'm a creature of habit and rarely change my style (same hairstyle for about a decade). My style of dress can be eccentric at times though - at work I wore a 3-piece-suit with waistcoat and pocket-watch and I own a trilby. I wish I'd been born in the 19th-C., I love the style: monocles, top hats and frock-coats, etc. I also own a 1950s gentleman's red silk dressing gown which were nicknamed "the Emperor's robes" by my flatmates. Sitting in my red leather Chesterfield, crammed into my university flat, smoking a cigar or sipping Earl Grey is probably a little bit out there but, hey, I've never claimed to be fashionable ;-) And trust me, my brothers and I can fight like cat and dog just like anyone else - and frequently do.

I never said you were uncolorful for reading and liking history. How do you think I got to be so much smarter than you? It's just that I would rather be out doing something. Without people like me, there would be nobody to write books about. I mean, who wants to read about you? Here's how it would go:
Christing Elizabeth Biang was born on some uneventful day in April in a little ol' shack in the state of Michigan, USA. Other than the few times when she got sick, went to HSLT or saw a baseball game she spent her whole life on the couch reading until she died. The End"
That is not the kind of stuff people like to read about. Get my point?
