So my sister who visits Asheville frequently from Orlando tells me how "hip" Asheville is andI should think about moving there knowing I am in fact looking to move from here on the north shore of LI. Born down the lower East side then to Brooklyn then Queens then LI. Now 56...soooooooo...I'm a NY'er through and through. As far as moving somewhere thats "hip"...that really turns me off!!! I'd prefere moving where people are "progressive" not wannabe hipsters and tripsters. As for me...I've lived down the lower east side when I was 16 in 1967 as things were changing. I was there right from that beginning. Spent a lot of time at the LEague For Spirtual Discovery on Water and Hudson St (aka The LSD Center). I've sat with Alan and his boyfriend Peter through readings there as well as with Billy Boroughs. That ws some kinda interesting place. I spent a few months up in Millbrook NY back then too...if you never heard of it then Google it...its a long story. I also spent a full week every year with Ram Dass and friends up at Omega here in NY. did that for about half a dozen years till he retired to Hawaii. Was on the Alan Burke Show in 67 with Emment Grogan and The Diggers. Lived in the back of the Ed Sanders Peace Eye Book store on 10th at putting together the pages of FU magazine...another long story... The reason I've included this brief bio is because i've been around all that kind of stuff all my life. the last thing on earth I want to do is move some where thats "hip"...or a wannabe town if you get my drift. I need authentic people. Thats who I like to surround myself with. I've been doing renovation and restoration work over 30 years now. I love my work. I love building things and I've earned my living as a craftsman for over three decades now. My question is....how do you think i would do in the Asheville area. I'm addressing this to people that KNOW the area...that live there. I've heard so many mixed messages. Anyone have the true scoop? Thanks Namaste' avi yama dass aka andy http://www.cliffordrenovations.com |

Did you ever move to Asheville? I think you should move there and write a book...sounds like you've led a pretty interesting life! I think "hip" has a different meaning for everybody. I also think that you should follow your own path(seems like you've been doing that) and not move to a place because somebody else told you to. I am from upstate NY and am contemplating a move to Asheville but I am not into the "wannabe" scene either. I was just curious if you made it to Asheville and what you thought about it if you did. |

Michelle, No I haven't moved yet. House is for sale still and I just lowered the price "alot" as of yesterday. To a number I'm thinking she have it sold pretty soon. Just wanting to move on already. Still looking in Asheville. That hasn't changed. A good place to get an "idea" of what an area is like is to look in the City-Data-Forum. For Asheville that'd be in the Western North Carolina section. Some pretty interesting mixes of people in there. Everyone from "yankee Go Homers"to the Christian right to libs to to to.... I can understand where everyone's coming from and whats interesting/funny to me is...any city you go into in the City Data Forum you get pretty much the exact same chatter. Everyone has the same issues anywhere you go yet everyone thinks they're so unique. We're really ALL just a buncha Bozos on the bus...lol. The minute everyone gets it...will be when we all might finally get along a bit better. You said I should write a book? I tried but I'm not real good at ut. I'm better at writing songs but with a voice like mine...well...never mind..lol. Someone else'd have to sing em'. Put it that way. My book/major motion picture will just have to stay tatooed inside my eyelids...lol. It'll be nice getting off this island and up to the mtns. It's been a long time. Lived in Virginia many moons ago up top a mtn with an old lady for a winter helping her out. Thats where I had my first tipi...till it blew off the mtn...ugh (wasn't finished tying it down and that night......well...the barn roof blew off too so... Lived in West Saugretties off 212 right up the road from Woodstock for a bit too...all many moons ago. I think it's time for another major change. Might get into doing a timber frame this time around. Need a change of pace in my construction techniques as well so that might just be the ticket...although they clain it's a "young man's sport"...who ever "they" are : ) We shall see. Anyway...stay in touch.....to be continued : ) Namaste on you too avi http://www.cliffordrenovations.com |

Avi- I hear you about moving on...I'm ready to fly the coop. Your house will sell when the time is right. It seems people from all over have gravitated to Asheville. May be the energy or wanting to commune with like-minded people whatever label they may carry. I like"bozos on the bus". We're all just trying to find our way and it seems when people are afraid to deviate from their religous beliefs or social norms, they are more likely to judge those that don't fit into a structured mold(like myself). Anyway, I still think you should write a book. I find your stories fascinating and the things that you have experienced could be a motivator for somebody just beginning their journey. As for your singing career and not having the voice...worked for Bob Dylan:) "Young Man's Sport"?? AAHHH what do "they" know!! With your wisdom and creative vision, let the building begin. Sounds like you're on your way to a new adventure, my friend. May they be filled with love and light. Maybe I'll catch up with you in Asheville. Namaste Michele |
