The Rosetta Story
Kathy Bakatova posted 8/16/10 11:21 PM
Is it true she was running a vegetarian restaurant and she wasn't vegetarian, I heard this about the current owner of Laughing Seed restaurant as well.
John Fletcher posted 8/16/10 11:25 PM
...and what about the Mexican cooks at Earth Fare and Whole Foods/Green Life?
I'm more into the rumors. Who knows for sure what happened to Rosetta Starr? Does "out of the country" mean South Carolina?
Frank Russo posted 8/19/10 1:36 PM
Weird! I heard you can get a veggie burger
at Burger King!
Marge Clayborne posted 8/20/10 9:19 PM
I have eaten at Rosetta's and I must say that the food is marginal. Sorry to have to say this. People seem cool.
Frank Russo posted 8/25/10 2:22 AM
Now I know there's something going on. Has anyone called Rosetta's?? Anyone thought maybe she was busted for a BIG pot deal?
Virato posted 8/29/10 4:06 PM
Are there any plans for a 100% organic
Vegan place to eat and trance dance to 3
AM?
Frank Russo posted 8/30/10 1:07 AM
What ever happened to the guy who was
doing Veg-in-out? I thought he was going to
open such a place in town
Virato posted 8/30/10 5:56 PM
It was planned to be a club. Bill
Nigjar (?) was his name and I heard he
also disappeared, and is somewhere in
Arkansas.
I also heard that Corey Pine Shane was
to open an herb shop right across from
Sunny Point restaurant, but it fell
through. It would be a great place for a
100% VEGAN, ORGANIC place. Rent I heard
was only $1,800 a month!

What about Mela, the Indian restaurant on Lexington Ave., Isn't this mostly vegetarian?
Virato posted 9/28/10 3:22 AM
Not really. I do not like the food at Mela's. I much prefer India Garden, across from the Asheville Mall...

I am finished with Rosetta's. I can longer in good conscious suggest anyone eat there either. As of this date I am removing Rosetta's advertising from Asheville Magazine.
It seems that "worker owned" to the employee owners of this restaurant also means incorporating mediocrity, stupidity and unconsciousness.
Last night my wife, Dhiraja, and I went there for dinner. A minute or two after my veggieburger was severed, a worker began spraying the table next to us with a toxic spray. Dhiraja and I gasped as this pungent, artificial unpleasant and obviously toxic came throught our olfactory system, and onto our food essentially ruining the meal for the both of us.
I called out to the cashier and the man who was spraying. I had to call out several times before I got their attention. When I asked what they were spraying they could not tell me. All the cashier could say was that she was sorry, and it was what they used.
When I asked why they were spraying while we were eating got another "I'm sorry."
As the cashier walked away, a significantly obese and disheveled woman (Dhiraja thought she may have been a homeless person) came to the next table next to us and began spraying the noxious stuff again.
Dhiraja felt she was doing this spitefully.
Whatever, it was totally unconscious.
I went into a rage, and stormed out leaving my food (which by now was coated with is toxic cleaner, and inedible). $17 and change down the drain. As Dhiraja and I went to bed AFTER a shower last night, we could still smell the toxic spray they were using at Rosetta's.
The food there is always a shot-in-the-dark, yet I always want to give them another chance, since I am in favor or non-corporate establishments.
When they start giving the food away for free at Rosetta's maybe they can spray what the want.
However, after last night's display and with such rapid turn-over and unconsciousness, I do not see myself eating at Rosetta's. I simply cannot trust their food!
I also heard a story from an employee talking about feces floating in the toilets, so all of this, and the questionable food (we once tasted rancid oil), I will wait until new, REAL owners with some awareness own this place.
It would be nice if they also returned our $17.
Now, off to Green-Lite Cafe on the other end of Lexington Ave

Virato, I know how you feel. It's sad. I also wanted to support Rosetta's, but I also have stopped going as have a few of my friends.
I didn't know about the toxic spray issue, bit isn't feces supposed to be in toilets, so what's the issue?

Virato,
Thank you for your support over the years. We are sorry for your negative experience here, but we need to clarify some details of your story. We will not address things that are not relevant to this event.
First of all, the restaurant closes at 11pm, your food was served after 11. Around that time, the staff begins procedures to shut down the restaurant.
The “toxic spray” that was being sprayed on the tables is an all natural counter spray made by a small local company Greenbee. The ingredients are as follows: rosemary essential oil, peppermint essential oil, saponified organic coconut and organic olive oils (w/ retained glycerin), organic hemp oil, organic jojoba oil, sodium tetraborate decahydrate (borax), citric acid, vitamin E, liquid castile soap and filtered Asheville water. Greenbee has a website www.greenbeeclean.com if you would like more information on their products. We use only environmentally friendly cleaners at Rosetta’s Kitchen and try to use the LEAST toxic cleaners that are possible to use in a restaurant.
The woman spraying the table was doing work in exchange for food. At closing we have a policy that people (sometimes homeless, sometimes down on their luck, always hungry) can do simple cleaning tasks (sweeping, wiping down tables) in exchange for food that would otherwise be composted. That was what the woman (who was pregnant by the way) was doing the other night. She would not have known what was in the spray because she was not an employee. We think it is a wonderful policy to help people out who are hungry and are willing to work in exchange for food.
Your version of the events that transpired next is only part of the story. You neglected to mention that you yelled at the cashier who was only able to respond “that she was sorry.” She asked you repeatedly what had happened because she had not witnessed the event and you continued to yell at her and ask her if she “was f**king stupid”. You asked her if she “wanted to know what it feels like” and blew/spit in her face. She has said no one has EVER been that rude to her in her life and she felt threatened. As an effort to diffuse the situation and because she didn’t want to be yelled at anymore, she walked away and got another employee to come and speak with you. As he was walking over, you tossed your food on the ground and started to walk out the door and that employee told you not to come back.
If you would have addressed the situation in a calm, respectful manner the staff would have made every effort to either get you new food or give you your money back. You did not even ask for your money back.
At Rosetta’s Kitchen we have ALWAYS had the policy that our staff are human beings and are to be treated with respect. This is not something that has changed, it has always been this way. Most of our customers are wonderful, occasionally we get someone who is rude and the cashiers just have to deal with it, but if a customer is disrespectful to and yells at one of our staff, or threatens them in any way, that is not tolerated. While we appreciate your past business, you are not welcome here anymore.

Good for the reply. I am sorry about the homeless volunteer, and it was not my intention to belittle her. It just seemed weird. As for the spray I cannot say what was in the spray but it was a spray and I doubt if what you say was in the spray goes well with veggieburgers in any event. Also Dhiraja works at Earth Fare, and we are both very attuned to odors and food. It simply ruined our food. And while we did arrive at 10:30 PM and you say you are open to 11 PM what is the problem??
I did not spit at casher but simply blew in her face to graphically show what a spray can do.
And by the way, the comments about an employee talking about feces. This employee says it was on the floor!
I willgive up being served by revolutionaries in favor of a good restaurant.
Thanks for the univitation!
