I want to say that I found this web site by curiosity, and got interested and I have lived here all my life. I am 22. I just found out that my grandmother worked as a nurse in the hospital. She was one of Dr. Swingle's nurse. It has never been spoke of in my household.I mentioned to my father and he said she used to work there. I am going to go talk with her about it. She is currently in a nursing home. I will post more info as it comes by. Thanks

There were bad things that went on in all hospitals, many things that are very bad as we think today. But back then the ways of doing things were considered ok and legal. I was told that the Dr. Swingle was a hard man to work for and he was rough on his employees. I have heard from other sources of the bad things that went down and we were all told to keep them hush hush.... things like that. I will be talking with my grandmother who was a nurse in the hospital and I will see just what went on...if she will talk about it!

I wanted to make an update to the last reply. I spoke with my grandmother and she worked for Dr. Swingle until they shut down the hospital which was the Health Department because they didn't have enough CNA's on duty to have the hospital licencesure. Dr. Swingle went to the VA hospital to work until he passed away. Dr. Swingle was a wonderful doctor and surgeon my grandmother said. She told me that still if he was living to this day she would have him operate or see her as her doctor. He knew his stuff. She said that he was a potty mouth, though he was very blatentant with his words and would cuss a lot. Also because they were so short handed, Nana (what I call my grandma), would have to go and hide to take a break and Dr. Swingle would come and round up the girls to come back and work more. Nana said that the she worked with the hospital until she got married in '59 She and I calculated that the hosptial shut down in around '57. She remembered that Joan Swingle, Dr. Swingles wife was the secretary and that the head nurse's name was Sue. She said that the only haunted stuff is people mistaking the noises for homeless people or vandals that have broken into the place. I asked her why they haven't tore down the old place and she said that she thinks that there is a lot of taxes owed to the state on the property and that is why. She said they ought to make apartments out of the building. She rememebered the last baby born there and it was a boy and the mother and baby were fine they both went home. I think the horror stories are just some made up tales that started out of rumors. I hope this helps everyone. Email with questions if you have any!
