well first of all i would reccomend getting some glutamine...if u dont know what that is, it basicly keeps you from being sore by helping your body recover from work out's faster. im not to bright with diets but i jus eat high protein/high calories/high carbs(good one's that is) and low fat n cholestrol. i weigh about 185 give or take and with about 13% body fat. I also try to eat about 6 meals a day that would equal up to about 5-6 thousand calories a day. but if your looking jus to get cut and tone up then i wouldnt reccomend what i do. im basicly on a all mass diet for now....good luck to you!

Hi parksy, i would like to start off by saying that to get big and cut takes a lot more than just heaving some iron off the floor a couple of times, randomally eating and watching the mirror and tape measure for some noticeable gains....because unless you have incredible genetics, they'll never come. Weight training involves three important factors, training, nutrition and rest. If you do all three correctly, you'll see fast gains and think that you're on steroids.
I have some good news and some bad news for you. Building size is quite a simple process, hard work, but simple. The bad news is that it is almost impossible to build mass whilst simultaneously burning away the fat. It just doesn't happen. This is why pro bodybuilders go through training phases, the building phase and the cutting up phase. You need to decide which you want to concentrate on now. Your building phase should last for about 9 months, and your cutting phase should last for 3 months.
If you want my training advice for getting big, reasd the topic "help me please" started by joey and follow my program there. You should be eating lots of natural protein sources, like fish, red meat, milk, eggs and cheese. NEVER eat skim or low fat stuff. Your body needs those nutrients to grow, and you also need that dietry fat so you can burn fat. Eat lots of fruit. Here's a trade secret, after working out, eat two bananas. This will replace your glycogen levels, and prevent your body from using muscle as a fuel to repair itself. It will be forced to burn fat instead. Also do three 25 minute cardeo sessions a week. Running is best!
As far a supplaments go, i wouldn't buy any. With very few exceptions, they are a waste of money and don;t benefit you anything. Lots of studies have also showed that glutamine does nothing for your recovery time. If you follow my program, you will get plenty of recovery time, and you won't overtrain. Overtraining decreases muscle mass!
For cutting up, you still follow my workout program, but lighten the weights and increase the reo range, to 8 - 12 reps. Increase the cardeo sessions to 4 to 5 a week, lasting for about 35 to 40 minutes. Also, cut all grainy carbs from your diet, and eat more fruit.
I don't know how old you are, so i can't really tell you how long it will take to see your desired results. Since you are new to bodybuilding, you will see results very quickly, provided you follow all my advice. You can easily put on as much as 20kg in a couple of years. After that, gains come slower and are a lot harder to get. In a couple of months, you will notice a significant increase in all your muscles.
Just so you know that this information i have given you is accurite, i am a Ph.D student specialising in the effects of weight training and nutrition on the human body, trying to find out the optimal conditions to make your body grow. All my advice is not only based on all my years of weight training, but is backed up scientifically. As i always tell people on these forums, you should take my advice now, because after i finish my study, i will start charging. :) Enjoy the training experience.
By the way, if you have any more questions, my e-mail is james.a.green@student.adelaide.edu.au i am more than happy to give you any more advice or answer any more questions that you may have.
