My home day care provider tells me that she is not allowed to apply sun block to the kids when they go outside. Is this true? They play outside a lot and she is already slighly sunburnt.

Yes, as far as I know she is wrong. Although regulations do vary from state to state but I cannot imagine WHY this would be a regulation. Of course children need sunscreen on!! What usually needs to be done is that a parent needs to fill out a medicine slip for this, just like if you would need her to give your child a subscription medicine, antibiotic and such. I could be she is misinterpreting the regulations on this. Most state regulations states the provider can only apply soap & water to any child without permission. Meaning if a child falls and cuts themselves they can a=only use soap and water to clean it. With anything else, peroxide, Neosporin, Desitine for diaper rash lotion etc.., they need a parents written permission before doing so.

What city and state are you in? Let me know so I can send you your states daycare regulations and/or licensing agency so you can contact them for more info.

Also in the meantime you can apply the sunscreen yourself to your child when you drop them off, it is not the best solution but better than nothing right now.

In Maryland we are not allowed to apply sunscreen unless we have permission from the parent. In fact we are only permitted to use soap and water. Some children are allergic to certain types of ingredients. I ask all parents to provide their own sunscreen. That way I don't have to worry about allergic reactions as much. I also state in my contract that I will be applying sunscreen as needed.
