I have not done this race since 2005 so this year in training for Boston this race would be a good point to see where I am at in my training.
Thanks, to the Old Northwest Runners Club for making the best of the conditions that we had. Also i thank them for the rare race this past year that had actual trophies with runners!
The two mile race was good with about 30 people that braved the ice and cold. The winner wore track spikes and winning in around 11:40 or so. The last two blocks of the race were nothing but ice! And the winner sprinted at full speed, what heart and guts!
The ten mile had maybe 50 runners. Anyone who came out today was a "true warrior" to run 10 miles is hard enough, then on roads totally covered with snow and ice about half an inch thick. Everyone was following in the footsteps of the person in front of them to find their best footing. They say it is 85% paved but that 15% of gravel road is where i ran my slowest mile 7:02 barely any traction at all. The start was good with two leaders out the gate. After a mile or two the leader was on his own. I stayed 5th for the first five miles, then a couple of runners got their second wind, but I stayed around 6:30 pace. Knocking it down to 6:11 on the last mile. I also sprinted the last two blocks very carefully. The winner ran 53:58 ( Anthony Witt) unbelievable in these conditions, awesome time for him. I was happy with 10th but a time of 1:03.40 was great in these conditions.
This race is just as good as i remember it in 2005 and 2004 when I last ran it. So next year mark your calenders and do this race.
Anyone else please feel free to comment on your thoughts of this race.
