Hey, so just something I was talking to some friends about but something that makes a whole lot of sense to me. I was talking to some guys who use to play in the league but don't anymore for age or other reasons and they brought this up which I thought I would share. They said why not get a couple of old players enough to be able to do one or both games a week and split them up. In other words each person would have a diamond that they ump each week. This takes away from players arguing that the player umps don't know how to ump or are being biased. I know there is interest in this and would save a lot of fighting and let some older guys get back into the game. Also even if we payed them would be worth it in my opinion as you no longer as a coach have to worry about using one of your players to ump and take all the heat from bad calls. |

This is something we can discuss with the coaches at the first meeting. My inital thoughts would be that if we pay umps for all the game in the season, there are a lot of games, so it turns into a big expense! If they volunteer we certainly won't get full coverage (it's tough to get a volunteer to break up their vacation week at the cottage to drive into town and ump.) But I'm sure nobody would complain if someone who knew how to ump showed up at their game and offered! |
