Author Topic:   Rule Check

Last night we had a play where I (the first baseman)ran to home plate because the ball was overthrown to our catcher. I stood on the plate, she threw the ball to me in time to get the runner out. Now, the runner said there is a rule that only the catcher is allowed to step on home plate to get the runner out, so he was safe.?
I have played a good number of years in this league, and never remember a rule like that. We looked in the rules, and could not find it at the time.
I'm just looking for some clarification from someone who knows for sure.
Thanks!

anyone can stand on homeplate. Only 'tagging the base runner' at home which is not allowed.

Sorry, I meant to say 'only tagging is not allowed'.
But I have another question: where is the 'no-tagging at home plate' rule applied? Is it when the runner is past the commitment line? This makes the most sense.

Yes, that's correct - The runner can be tagged until they cross (or step on) the comittment line. After that, they can only be forced out by stepping on home plate with the ball.
JT is also correct that any of the 10 defensive players on the field can make the force play at home.

That's what I said... But they were convinced that was a rule in church baseball... The call went our way anyways, because it was not listed in the rules. :) No harm done.

That's the way to resolve it - If it's not in our rules, or an official softball rule or both - You can bet it isn't a rule. :)
