Author Topic:   "Donut" Pressure Relieving Devices

I have heard that "Donut" Pressure Relieving Devices used in chairs cause more harm than not using anything at all. However, we sometimes find that our residents want to use them because they are convinced that they'll help. Does anyone know of an article or study that I can access to provide education? Thank you.

You're right about donuts doing more harm that good, because you are then creating pressure around the wound and starving the surounding area of blood making the original wound worse. best thing is to move the person around so that the body is moved around alittle to get the circulation going. Also get enough protein and nutrition. Also take a look at pressure reducing cushions (not donuts)

An active alternating pressure cushion prevents sores better than any other type of cushion. It also allows healing for Stage 1 and 2 sores without bedrest.
Anything else is just a bandaid.
