I remember a period of 3-4 years in the mid-1980's when British television seemed to produce at least one outstanding piece of drama each year, (and I see that all of them are in the list of top 100 British TV shows). In 1985-Edge Of Darkness(No15), 1986-The Singing Detective(No20), 1987-Tutti Frutti(No82),1988-A Very British Coup Most of the TV shows we get nowadays are slick and superficial and instantly forgettable, and very few match up in complexity and originality to those four. And, of course, Edge Of Darkness was the best. I remember watching the first episode on BBC2, and being amazed at how good it was. And the next five episodes were just as good. Even now, 20 years on, it doesn't seem to have dated at all. It still seems topical today. However, having said all that, there is one very brief scene that still bothers me to this day. Just before Craven goes to pick up Emma at the very start he watches a newsreader on TV announcing that the government is releasing a new election manifesto to attract the green vote called 'The Greening Of England'. Now no government, not even one as insensitive as Thatcher's Tories would dare ignore the other Home countries in such a way. 'The Greening Of Britain' maybe. But, that one small quibble aside EOD is flawless. Good site, too. |
