Hi I am new to the board. I have been married to my pakistani husband for 11 yrs and love to cook pakistani! I think the differance between indian and paki food is the type of spices and amounts. Pakistani cooking uses the basic chili powder, turmeric and sometimes others like coriander powder and cumin. The rest are used not so much. But indian spices use these 4 plus others more frequently. Even certain other spices are used in differant combos to give differant tastes to the foods. |

I have grown up in a Pakistani home and ate Pakistani food my entire life. Pakistani food is very tasty. But i have tried Indian food as well. Indian food uses more turmeric powder, and is a bit more oilier than paki food. They are both tasty though. But i think Pakistani food is more tastier than Indian food. |

I think that pakistani food is richer and tastier. Indian food is a lil' bland and more oilier....pakistani food rules!!! |

Well, I have only had Indian food a few times and it was bad, bad, bad. A lot of others must have agreed because the place where we use to go went out of bussiness. Pakistani food is really good though, I cook it for my Pakistani husband all the time. Cooking rules!!! |

Let me start by saying that India is the mother of Pakistan and it is the origin of pak ,to say that there is a lot of difference in thei9123r foods is very wrong and being an Indian Muslim iam proud to say that the Muslim food from india can beat any world cuisine... the Mughalai food ,the punjabi food are the major similarities between the 2 nations and in india there is a wide variety of choices and a simple dish can be cooked in thousand ways pertaining to every state therefore iam not incorrect in saying that Indian cuisine that is the origin of pak is the best in the world! |

Well.... i've had many bad experiences with indian restaurants.. so i would say that indians don't know how to cook.. Pakistani food rules! oh by the way farhat, it does not make any sense when you say muslim food in india :oI any food in india is only and only indian food. |

Growing up in Canada, I have had food from all over the world. However, without touching any sensitive nerves, I would like to say that Indian food does have good vegetarian dishes. However, Pakistani food has its own distinct taste, which is a reflection of its geographic location and culture. This is a dubious argument that India is the mother of Pakistan, then India must have better food. Different countries come into being because of these regional differences, in culture, traditions, and food. |

Indian and Pakistan were once the same country but you must know that the different areas of each country have different tastes and foods. I traveled throughout Pakistan with my husband and it was amazing to see the different cultural differences and looks of the people not to mention the foods and tastes. From what I have seen, pakistanis eat meat and a lot of it. It is their primary source of food whereas indians eat mostly legumes/grains/rices/daal. I also think that the indian restaurants where I live don't do justice for indian food. The taste is not authentic. But i wish we had more Paki restaurants out there. |

I think i kind of agree with tracey. Pakistani food is meat-oreinted whereas Indian food is more veggie. My parents in law are from India and I always thought my husband's mom cook sooooooooooo good! Although growing up as a Pakistani, I have to admit I have developed a taste for Pakistani food more:) |

I dont understand when someone mentions Tandoori and balti chickens, Bariyani and Kebabs why do people think its Indian food????? Indian relegions mainly Hindu and Sikh both dont allow meat to be eaten. So how are these Indian food??? This food is our tradition which comes from the Persian and Afghanistan. These are all Farsi language words in the first place so how is it Indian?? Mughals introduced all this to Indians and sold our traditions to them... Our clothes, the way we live, our food, our musical instruments, Our language was farsi and they mixed us with Indians through introducing URDU... Big Shame.. If I get a chance to become the Ruler of pakistan, I would make the national language Farsi back again.. Atleast people wont get mixed up with Indian tradition and pakistani tradition... |

To all my fellow Pakistanis, who are strongly influenced by their culture and their films... Have some shame and respect..You pay to watch their films which you cant even watch with your family, while they are killing your brothers, sisters, mothers and fathers in kashmir... Ever thought about it?????? If I would get a choice to kill an Indian soldier or a paki like you... I would kill a paki.... |

To Mr Farhat who claims that India is mother of Pakistan... where did u get that from??? My friend that was the British who merged half of the Afghanistan with India and later on they split it up and gave it a new name Pakistan... Our language is Farsi.. is it an Indian language?? Unfortunatly we dont speak it anymore but that proves that pak was never part of India and even if it was only about 100 yrs.. Look for a map of Afghan Empire of about 1800... If you cant find one contact me on huzaifa44@hotmail.com Dont you realise that Indians have this thing common in them that they adopt something from others and slightly change it lable it as Indian?????? for example.. SIKHS.. they copy every thing from us... Turbans, beareds, their little knife which they have with them all the time, which is copied from the sword which is the symbol of Islam... and they made a new relegion out of it... Coming back to the food again, all this food which is eaten in pakistan comes with the Muslim rulers migrating from the East such as persia, turkey and afghanistan... so India is out of question... copy again... Likewise the Musical instruments.. Who made sitar?? who made Tablas???? Sarod??? and yet everyone thinks they are Indian instruments... All because of thick PAKIS out there who dont even know all this themselves... and yet they have copied the most respectful and most beautiful Instument from afghanistan and pakistan, The RUBAB... slightly changed it in the shape and named it as Indian Rubab... Now you tell me how could you say that India is the mother of Pakistan ??????? |

India, the mother of Pakistani food? Definitely not. I tried Pakistani food for the first time this year ... and adored it!!! I was skeptical because I hate Indian food. But Pakistani food is much better, in its flavour, consistency and ingredients. Reminds me a lot of Middle Eastern and Afghani food, which I also love. Delicious. |

To tell you the truth, pakistani food is better to me. All pakistanis are going to say this. Indians are going to say their food is better. Why? because it's what they have been raised on. Even though we are not pashtuns, farsi was the language of what is now pakistan. It was actually old persian. As the people lived on their hindus developed urdu which was a cross between the two. When the arabs and turks came they added their influence in the language. urdu is a turkish word that means army. Why do you think pashtuns fit in so easily with pakistani muslims? In india pashtuns turn just like hindus, ex. shahrukh kahn, salman kahn. Our country conists of some indian descendents, but the majority of our ancestors come from from west asia. This comes from a punjabi muslim who lives in bahawalpur. |

I don't think there is any need to disrespect any country, it was a simple question, there is no need for arguments. I personally think that the difference between Pakistani and Indian food are the spices they use. The recipes are different. Indian food contains alot of Turmeric Powder. Pakistani food is a bit more spicier than Indian food. And more tastier as well. |

IT IS VERY FUNNY THAT PEOPLE COMPARE PAKISTANI FOOD WITH INDIAN FOOD. ACTUALLY ALL THE FOOD WHICH IS NOW IN THE PAKISTAN IS INDIAN BECUASE PAKISTAN WAS INDIA UNTIL 1947. HOWEVER, THE VARIETY OF FOODS ARE STILL IN INDIA AS PAKISTAN IS VERY SMALL COUNTRY COMPARE TO INDIA. IN THE WESTERN WORLD AND IN THE EAST IT IS CALLED INDIAN FOOD NO ONE KNOWS ABOUT PAKISTANI FOOD. |

My mom loves Fauzia's Pakistani Recipes! there seems to be some problem with the homepage right now though-it is all text. The main diff. I have seen is that Pakistani food emphasizes a lot more meat and Indians use a lot of haldi (or at least all the Gujaratis I know do). Pakistani cuisine is most similar to Indian Punjab. |

I live in canada, and I have tried indian food at all types of restaurants cheap or xpensive which makes a difference in the tatse as well, but the idea is same the moment U tatse indian or Pakistani food U can tell that where is it from. I think the main reason is they use tons of tumeric and lots of yougret and coconut milk in every other dish.but I can say it 100% that Pakistani food is really really good, we have friends from india as well and they love our food but their food is ok. |

Pakistani food is the best. Indian chaats are good. There is a lot difference between Pakistani food and Indian food. For those who don’t know the difference or can’t tell the difference should eat at Indian and Pakistani restaurants and then tell the difference themselves. Simple is that. : ) |

Hey...I've checked this page for the first time and was so amused to read some of the replies. I really wonder why we have to make anything that includes the two words India & Pakistan into an instant war...I really think we should all grow up and try to end this silly thing. And not on a site which is talking simply about food...I really think both the cuisines are similar with just a few differences like the turmeric being more in Indian food & the spices a bit heavier in Paki food. And just one info for all of you...if you ever happen to go to UK..Bradford n such places you'll find n number of Indian restaurants there succesfully being run by Pakistani nationals living there...:-) |

you all have failed to realize that most of the food differences in south asia are based on regional differences. ex. coconut and veggies in s.india w/ sarsson, curry puta, haldi, lots of meat in a tandoor in punjab with dal flavored w/ garlic, ginger, cumin, and even more meat w/o dal in nwfp flavored w/ yogurt, saffron, whole spices. food is not based on national divisions but local traditions and in the years past, of course there has been some overlap. whether pakistan was once india or afghanistan doesn't matter. why try to find your national identity thru identification with another nation? the region that is now pakistan has its own culture and unique characteristics that are rapidly being obliterated by corruption and thick headed narrow minded ppl that focus on hating another country (india), or adoring a ppl that don't give a damn about us (afghanistan, "persia", and the west). why not instead focus on making "pakistani" a label that means something independant of identification w/ other associations? mr. khan especially--if you love your country enough to kill as you say, why not love it enough to devote time to bolstering its economy? educating its ppl? uniting its disenfranchised? btw, the sword is not the symbol of islam. islam is not represented by any symbols- its supposed be refleted thru the peace of a muslims heart and his/her loving treatment of humanity. so why not tone down the political rhetoric on this recipe page and channel our enthusiasm and passion to more productive ends? |

At the end of the day it is all about quality food...na Hindustani ya Pakistani...When we scream about the regional excellence we forget that these barriers are all man made...the Indian sub continent(let's not call it India or Pakistan)definitely offers some of the best gourmets to the world...The question about the difference...flavours vary slightly and blend slightly and they are more or less members of the same fraternity...It is high time that we acted as sensible world citizens and stopped fighting about being Hindustani ya Pakistani...Yes this part of the world offers umpteen variety of quality food. http://isouthpotpourri.blogspot.com |

A very unfortunate thing about the Indo Pakistani food available abroad is that they are all far from authentic and in fact at times a shame in those names...so it is no wonder some of the Europeans boo our food without really tasting it!! I have been to several asian restaurant abroad and unfortunately 90% of them are far from authentic...So I think rest of the world will have try these food in India /Pakistan to really conclude its taste! http://isouthpotpourri.blogspot.com |

Northern Indian Non Vegetarian food and Pakistani Panjab food is almost identical. On the other hand the people in karachi who basically hailed from India tend to eat same foods as their counterparts in India. In Karachi, Pakistan one can taste meals from across India from Gujrat to Calcutta and from UP to Bengal. So in summary whatever we eat in Pakistan is all available in India but not vice versa. |

I found this site while browsing for pak dishes, and fonud a nice discussion. I'm havee been working adn now living in the west and almost every westren ask me this question. THIs is indian???any thing, i have explain him or her NO< its not and breifing them with the difference. WEll, pakistani dishes are a mixture of indo pak subcontinent, but predominant by THE MUGHALS, which means a beautiful blend of persia, turkish, arabs and indians, which makes it so differnt and delious. WHile indians have more vegetarian and lentilis food, they add too much of spices and make it so hot that burn the tate and on the other hand every thing is fried to give it a taste, If they start meat, ihope their taste will get better!! |
