“What brothers are for” By: Macy D. I watched my brother’s coffin as the hired men covered it with soil. I felt tears pooled in my eyes but none of them dropped. I saw mom staring blankly at the coffin. Tears were streaming down in her cheeks. My father rubbed her back & embraced her… “‘lo Kevin! The bus is here! We’ll be late!” I yelled. “Coming!” he shouted as he ran down the stairs. When he passed by me, he grabbed my arm and dragged me out of the house. “Hey we’ll be late… what took you so long?” he said sarcastically. I laughed at his joke & slapped him on his back. Hello! I’m Kyryn, fourteen years old. I’m studying in my… school of course. I have an older brother who I think loves me very much. Well, I love him too. We live in our house… just joking. I mean in Glen Burne. We have a very simple family. My mother is a filipina and my dad is an American. So consider us as half Filipino, half-American. “Hey stupid filipina, you’re not supposed to be her. You should be in your own country!” said Maxine my bestest best mortal enemy. I ignored her but she pulled my hair & pinched me. I ran away from her & went to my brother’s classroom & I told him everything. Then, I found my brother in front of Maxine scolding her for what she did to me. “It’s all right Kyr, here, wipe your tears,” he said. “Thanks I owe you one,” I replied. “Sus! That’s nothing. That’s what brother’s are for!” he said proudly. I smiled at him & embraced him. He kissed me on the head & said, “Ok, so now be careful. Just tell me if that Maxine bothers you again. And, oh, tell mom & dad I’ll go to Berg’s house for a project. I’ll be home before six. Be careful in going home, ok?” “Ok! Be careful too,” I said. “I love you, sis!” he handed me a flower. “Yuck! Corny mo!” then off I went. I laid down the sofa, watching TV. I’ve done all my homework, so nothing to worry about. I glanced at the clock above. “Quarter to seven. Boy! Kevin you’ll be dead!” I decided to wait for him until 7:10. The clock stroked 7:30, but Kevin isn’t home yet. I picked up the phone & dialed Berg’s number. “Kevin! You idi… oh, Berg. I’m sorry Kevin’s still there?” I said as my cheeks flushed hot pink. “Oh, he ain’t there? He left at around 5:45 PM,” Where could he be? Do you know some place else where he likes to hang-out?” “Hmm… I think in Quake. That’s his favorite place!” “Oh, thanks!” as I hanged up. I got my pants & headed for the door, when suddenly, the phone rang. “Oh, shit! Who could this be?” “Hello, Kevin?” I said. “No. This is St. Macy’s hospital. Is this where Kevin Benchley lives?” the man said on the other line. “Yes this is her sister… no my parents aren’t here… what? Oh, my gosh! Kevin? Where? Ok!” I dialed mom’s cell no., “Mom! We’ve got a problem!” 201,201 room 201. My brother’s room no. Ringed in my head as I walk in the hospital’s cozy corridor. I spotted the room, it was half opened. I burst in & saw my brother lying on bed, his legs were cemented, his head was bandaged & tubes were connected to him. I saw mom at the side of the bed holding Kevin’s hand. I walked to her side & asked, “What happened?” “Your brother was hit by a drunk driver,” she said & broke into tears. I joined her. Suddenly, Kevin’s eyes opened & murmured. We embraced him & cried. He touched my hand and said, “Kyryn, my dear little sister, I love you very much. Take care of yourself.” “Mom, I love you too. Thanks for all & tell Da…” suddenly, Dad came in & ran to Kevin. “Oh, Dad. Thank you for all. Take care of Mom & Kyr.” Then he looked at me with a teary eyes, “Kyr, I’m sorry if… if I will not be able to… protect you from Maxine anymore. But promise me before I go… you’’ reconcile with her, ok?” he said softly trying to catch up his breath. “Yes, but… please don’t go,” I said. “I’ll miss you! What’ll I do without you? Please don’t go, Kevin! Please don’t… Kevin… Kevin… Kevin? Kevin!!!” I cried hysterically. He held tight my hand & looked into my eyes, “I love you.” Then he closed his hazel eyes. We all cried and embraced him tight. "Paano" by Krystle Moreno *inspired by Freestyle's song, paano. send me your comments, people!* Yakap, yakap ko siya dahil luha’y dagliing dadaloy, Ngunit paano ko sasabihin ito? It was already 2:21 in the morning and Alex stared at the ceiling blankly. Dark circles formed around his eyes as he tried to think of what to do next. He was sitting up on Natasha’s bed, his whole body aching from last night’s events. Alex was forced to have a drinking spree with her and a few friends. Natasha always loved him but unfortunately, he does not harbor any feelings for her. Until she made him drink too much, took him home and there Alex, unaware of his actions, indulged himself in making love to Natasha. His mind ached as he stared as his reflection in the mirror... He felt so used... Natasha lay on the bed with a triumphant smile on her face... His dreams fell before his eyes... His dreams with his only love... Danielle... What will he tell her? How will he say all that has happened between Natasha and him? Will she forget her feelings for him forever? Puso’y tiyak na masusugatan, kaya ba niyang maunawaan? Paano ko sasabihin ito? Danielle cried in bed, lying with Stephen, a very popular senior in school, who was sleeping soundly at the moment. She was really unaware of how he had a clear path in taking her and destroying the very thing she protected, her virginity. All she can remember was last night’s party and the beer binge with some friends. Danielle was sure she only took two rounds when suddenly her vision swirled around her. She woke up, finding herself lying naked in a darkened room; Stephen was already undressed and went on top of her. She tried to scream but his hand muffled her cries. He tied a handkerchief around her mouth to cover her screams and started to ravage her like an animal. Danielle tried to fight back but he was far too strong and she was still lightheaded at the time. Tears streamed down her cheeks as Stephen crossed her threshold and caused her such terrible pain. What will she tell Alex? How can she explain all that has happened? What if she became pregnant? Will he still love her despite of her being tainted? The school bell rang and signaled the start of classes. Alex was walking down the halls when he came face to face with Danielle. Her eyes widened with shock and backed away from him while he swallowed hard and took a few steps back. They were two feet away from each and both were reluctant to speak to each other. No... I...I can’t tell her yet... came the forceful thought in his mind. I...can’t face him yet... Not like this... Not when I just betrayed him... They spun around and ran away from each other. Hidden from their sight, two figures were in a conversation. "Looks like our plan’s a success, Natasha..." "I told you it’ll be a piece of cake, Stephen..." "It all went well, eh? Now it’s done, we have what we always wanted..." "You have sweet Danielle in your hold now, while my trophy is Alex... He’s a god in bed, y’know..." "Shut up! You know that I’m the best there is, sister... And Danielle had a taste of that erotic passion..." "All I can say that what we did is a job well done... Ain’t that right, brother?" Danielle looked deep into his eyes Nimble hands tore away the clothing on their bodies and skin brushed against skin. Bitter sorrow died as it was replaced by sweet pleasure. Her moans were cut off by his electrifying kisses and the world seemed to dissolve in their vision as they reached the height of their passion. Souls united, as exhaustion took its toll on both of them. "Thanks for the company, Alex. I really appreciate it." "No problem. I'll be seeing you in school tomorrow then?" Danielle kissed his cheek and replied, "Of course... Take care, okay?" Alex ran off, saying, "Yeah... Bye..." They have decided. Eventhough their love never vanished despite of what happened, what they share is forbidden. Alex is Natasha's now and Danielle is Stephen's. Two worlds apart maybe but always united in heart. 'Stephen and Natasha may own my body and Alex's, but they will never have our hearts and souls. It hurts not to be with him, but we know it's for the best...' A tear escaped her lids as she softly called out, "Alex... I love you..." She went inside and sat behind her father's desk. She opened a drawer and saw his revolver gun and four bullets. 'Natasha... I hate you...' 'Only Danielle owns my heart, not Natasha, not anyone.' Alex gritted his teeth as he ran further up the road.
