As I understand it, the Barony was passed to your son and that you are the 'former' Baron? If this is the case then "Lady Cowdenknowes" is the title used by the Current Baron's wife. To refoer to your wife as Lady Cowdenknowes would seem very incorrect and certainly inappropriate. There can only be one Lady Cowdenknowes as I understand it. I may of course be wrong but I have been around the block for a while and I know that two people cannot use the same title??? |

If a Baron passes the his Barony to another he can no longer refer to himself by his former title as he is no longer a Baron, this become the sole right of the 'new' Baron. Equally, the wife of the former Baron no longer has any right to refer to herself as "Lady X" or "Baroness of X" as these are courtesy titles used by the wife of the 'actual' Baron. A former Baron may be commonly known as the "former Baron of X" out of courtesy but he is no longer the actual "Baron of X" and should not refer to himself as such as this is seen as entirely inappropriate. If Mr Harden has indeed passed on his Barony to his son or whomever, then he should no longer refer to himself as "Baron of Cowdenknowes" as this is now the sole right of his son or whomever he passed the Barony on to, as are the courtesy titles of "Lady Cowdenknowes" & "Baroness of Cowdenknowes" as these are now the courtesy titles of the new Baron's wife. John is quite correct in his statement above. |

As a matter of fact, the Baron of Cowdenknowes is a resident of Atlanta,Ga., and is a member of the St. Andrews society there. For verification of just who is who, I suggest a check-in with the Lyon Court might be appropriate |

You are Quite correct gentlemen, in fact I am now refered to as "The Old Baron of Cowdenknowes" and my wife as "The Old Baroness". However at the time of writing my post I was still The Baron of Cowdenknowes. Sorry for the confusion. |

Is your real name Barry? Or is that just a nickname for Baron? Just poking fun... So, how does one become a baron? Must one win the hearts of the people or of a certain group of people, or perform some great deed that grants him a noble title? Or does he simply have to be born to a certain father? I judge people by who they prove themselves to be, what type of person they are, and so on. I am not impressed by a title. I'm sure, Barry, that you are a wonderful person. But to introduce yourself as the Baron of X, implies that you feel the need to impress people you don't even know. I wonder what Freud says about that personality trait... |
