That's the 3 valve version of the Ahltorn that used to be made be Mirafone (Note, Miraphone changed its name to Mirafone for the U.S. market. I don't know if they still use it.) I have the 4 valve version which I bought new a long time ago. It is a wonderful instrument. |

A 4 valve appeared on e-bay about 2 years ago (also left handed). If I remember, it was in better condition than this one. I should have gone for it. *** VG, is yours left handed as well. Did they make righties? |

Yes, mine valves with the right hand, bell to the left shoulder. I didn't notice that the one on ebay was a lefty. I wonder if the image just got reversed? My horn has a big sound. It's a big bore, large throated horn. With the four valves I have a good 3 octave range. The only group I've played in with it is a studio jazz band in which I sat as 3rd trombone. I got some funny looks, but managed to hold my own. I was transposing the bass clef and key by sight! Something only a former French Horn player could do, I suspect! |

you have all gotten me interested in the Miraphone - but why is the price over double Cevrney? What are the Miraphone's special characteristics. Thanks for a reply |

The difference is quality. Miraphone is pro stuff, Cerveny is generally good student-level/pro entry-level quality. The best bang for your buck is the St Petersburg "alto horn" version of this horn. It's a good pro horn, albeit with three valves. |
