Does anyone out there know of a device or program that can simultaneously create an accompaniment to the horn playing? I have found a DigiTeck vocalizer that I can play into and get two to four voices in harmony, though the harmonizers lack a real strong horn tonality.I was told, somewhere on line, about MagicScore Maestro 5, but as read through their manual I could not find a way to accomplish creation of a line of music from a horn, and hearing accompaniment at the same time.

The tonality is not the problem. That device just pitch shifts the input vocal. If you input your horn playing, that would be pitch shifted and you’d get instant horn harmony. But, it works by using chords input from a guitar to determine the harmony. Without some kind of indication of the tonality it can’t harmonize. You might find a unit that you just tell it what key you are in and it does the rest. But this doesn’t give the unit as much information. And cheaper units might only do a basic I-IV-V progression.**** Then there is Band in a Box. This takes a chord progression that you input and generates an accompaniment. But with this, you’ll get a cheesy synth guitar accompaniment. **** A combination of the two might work. Have Band in a Box generate a guitar chord progression. Run your soundcard output into the guitar input of the harmonizer. If you can turn the guitar on the harmonizer way down so you can’t hear it, you’ll have your 4 part horn harmony.

Just a clarification. I assumed that by "lack a real strong horn tonality" you meant an accomp that sounds like a horn?

Thank you Craig, you are correct. It sounds SOMETHING like horns. I like the effect better than nothing. What I would really like would be something that would create a total accompaniment. It has been 59 years since I had any composition training, so I need something to do it for me.The vocalizer has some easily varied programs, and I am learning how to make them sound better - but like all of us - I want more. Thanks a lot for replying.

I hate canned accompaniment as well. One thing I’ve done with my Mandolin, though it is a lot of work, is input a duet, trio or quartet into my notation program and use the playback features to play the other parts. I haven’t played my horn in years. Not having a group to play with just doesn’t keep the interest up. I’m hoping to try this with my horn as well. I really want to get back into playing. Also for solo works, I can use the piano accompaniment or my program can take the piano and “arrange” it into a different instrumentation.
