Author Topic:   Baritone to Tenor??

I played baritone in high school band for four years with about four years of trumpet before that. I was never exceptional at the trumpet but became rather proficient in the baritone by the end of it all. I was thinking about buying a baritone for myself to play since, as through all those years I just borrowed the schools instruments in stead of buying my own. But before I went through with it I stumbled on the Eb horn. It would be nice, I think, to play a slightly higher/lighter horn, but I would appreciate to know the knowledge of those who know. What are your opinions about this? is it a good switch? would you recommend it? pitfalls I should watch for? brands that are good? I'm all ears! thanks!

The first question is whether or not you'll have access to music for Eb horn in the band(s) you're playing in. The second question is how you take to the instrument. If you like it, play it. After all, that's really what brass playing is all about. After that, there's no telling how you're going to do on any particular horn. Some do better, the larger the mouthpiece, and vice versa. As you infer, it's really about finding that balance between what you like and what you're good at. As to finding a good horn, Eb tenor (alto) horns differ from, say, trumpets, because there isn't a smooth range from really bad to really good. Amati's best horn is affordable and a good entry-level horn, in my estimation. If you check eBay, there are British sites that sell used student Bessons. Good luck!

I played baritone in high school and like the tenor horn much better. (I started on it, but they didn't have a tenor horn part in the high school band...familiar story). Anyway, I think the tenor horn is similar to play, but is a nicer instrument -- as I tell my cornet-playing children, it's much more emotive. You can get a good gloomy sound on the tenor horn that can't be matched on some of the brighter brass instruments (imo!). So, I think it's a personal preference. You should try it first, before buying, though.

Good afternoon to all. I am wondering as a euphonium player that is intrigued by the alto, and tenor horn side of life, what are the differences in the mouth piece cup sizes. Are the mouthpieces for the tenor horn about the same as those for the baritone, or closer to that of the alto horn size. I am assuming that this forum being labeled tenor home page that is is refering to the actual tenor horn, and not the alto horn. I know some people mix the horns and names up because of historical confusions. thanks for any info.

No, here the Tenor is the same as the American Alto. Since the British Brass Band is where the instrument is primarily used in this day, we use the UK term. What would be termed a Tenor Horn in the US is the same as the UK Baritone which is a narrower bore than the American Baritone.
