I have read about some Eb Alto players that have added a fourth valve to reach the low notes. I find this very desireable. Being a horn player first, I miss that low register! Does anyone know - is this an add-on kit, or a completely custom setup?

Ok, after a bit more reading about tuba tubing length theory, I discover that the fourth valve is actually a compensating valve that corrects the inherent sharpness that results by using valve combinations. I must have misunderstood the original article.

If you really hunt around, you'll find the odd 4-valve and compensating horns. Most are around 100 years old and older. I've wanted at least one manufacturer to make a rotary double Eb horn for years, too.

As a former French Horn player myself, I know what you mean about missing the lower register. That's one reason I loved playing my 4 valve Mirafone Althorn, the 4th valve got me chromatically all the way down, with the exception of the low C#, which could be lipped down from the D if necessary. But now, I just play the 3 valve Tenor/Alto Horn that keeps me in the same written range as Trumpet, from low F# on up. I play from Trumpet music now, and I don't miss the low notes at all.
