Let Me answer your question straight with a simple example
You have caught a hot iron rod with your hand and you are weeping
You are asking Me to remove the heat from the rod and give you happiness
For this you are constantly praying the Lord to use His special power.
I have to laugh at this situation because the easiest solution is to remove
Your hand from the rod to be happy, which you are not doing at all
You cannot get rid of your attachment to the rod, but you pray the Lord
To cool the rod using His Maya, is this prayer justified in any way?
Why don’t you get detached from your family bonds and be happy?
The hand with which you have caught your family members is your mind
You detach your mind from the bonds of your family members
And be peaceful always and there is no need of praying the Lord for this
When the solution is in your hand why do you ask the Lord for it?
When the solution is out of your hands there may be justice in asking the Lord
In the first stage you detach your mind from them and be worry less
In course of time when your detachment by mind becomes complete
You will spontaneously leave your duties also and attain bliss
The detachment from the family comes by your attachment with the Lord
As the bond with the Lord becomes more and more strong, your family bonds
Become weaker and weaker and finally all the bonds disappear
In this state you are left over only with the bond with the Lord
This state is called “Eka Bhakthih” in Gita or the single pointed devotion
Devotion means love and this is related to the plane of mind
As the faculty of intelligence becomes more and more sharp
By the knowledge preached by the Lord, the devotion to Lord
Becomes more and more strong, thus knowledge is acting as
Both fertilizer as well as pesticide on both the sides simultaneously
It acts as a fertilizer for the bond with the Lord, which is like a plant
The plant grows slowly and becomes a huge tree by this fertilizer
The family bonds are like the insects that attack this devotion plant
For those insects this divine knowledge acts as a pesticide also
The knowledge is also the generating factor like the water for the seed
Only by the knowledge of the Lord, the devotion is generated
Devotion is the love or attraction towards the Lord to attain Him
It ends in agony or Vedana as told by Ramanuja, thus knowledge is
The generating factor, the fertilizer and the pesticide simultaneously

"bread of Heaven, bread Of Heaven leed me now and forever more"
P.S though I have spoken in jest here (In case you may have missed the Spiritual message) I have also spoken the truth with every word. There is no rod!

Wee box for a big reply.
Dattaswami
Removing misery etc puts the horse behind the cart as we need problems and mistakes to learn from. Putting an end goal as a practice or means does not help us understand why it is there. Tackling what's "wrong" with us does not assist understanding and the Lord, god or whatever the name won't get you any help. If 'god' wanted us to be good we'd be that way; it goes a lot deeper than that. If getting rid of wrongs worked we'd be perfect by now.

Yo dattaswami, you're pne self righteous fundafrikkinmentalist guruguy! Bet you make a lot of money at it,huh. You inspired me to write this song. Remember thr summer of 1968; The Who came out w/ this gut grabbing rythm of a song called Summertime Blues.... Well, to that melody , try
(dadadaDum, dadadaDum,)
I got a gal named little boni yoni
(dadadaDum, dadadaDum)
She's as skinny as a stick o' macaroni
She got the Shakti, an' she got the pran
She got satchitananda tatooed on her bum.
Sometimes I wonder what I'm a'gonna' do
Ain't no cure for the jaded bahkti blues

Try to enjoy the worry
When worry is inevitable, enjoy it and be wise
Even continued happiness leads to mental worry
Thus happiness and worry must be alternative
If you are worried by the continued happiness
You are worried at the cost of the result of your good effort
Instead of this it is better to get worry at the cost of your sin
Let the sin give some trouble and then you worry out of it
In this way the result of the sin is spent and the not the result of good effort
The loss in your present worry may be compensated in the future
But the time lost in your past worry cannot be compensated
Because the life span of any human being is fixed
Your loss may be compensated by million times in the future
But even one second of your lost time can never be compensated
Therefore, understand this and think about the value of the time
This knowledge of the value of time is called as ‘Kala Janana’
Which means the knowledge of the future that you should know,
Which provides the possibility of the compensation of all the loss
Except the loss of time, therefore, time is the most precious.
You may waste anything that can be again procured in the future,
But never waste the time, which you can never compensate.

There are two ways to escape the mental worry in this world
The first way is by obtaining the peace, which is zero
The second way is by achieving the bliss, which is plus
Worry is minus, peace is zero and bliss is plus
To escape minus, either you should be in zero or in plus

Bliss can be obtained only from the Lord in this world
Since Veda says that the Lord alone is bliss “Anando Brahma”
Veda also says that the Lord alone can give you the bliss
“Esha Hyeva Anandayati” this is quite logical in fact
The water is alone cool and so it alone can give coolness
Whatever is said in the Vedas, it is always logical

You really seem stuck in dogma. Do you not see it? I call it spiritual psychobabble. It's like the stuff you hear from Christian televangalists.

Virato, have you ever been stuck in dogma?

Dogma is taking your beliefs way too seriously. It would seem the trick to not being miserable is to be still within the actions of that moment. Personally, I enjopy doing the dishes, it greatly undermines the misery to be one with hot soapy water and a task that everyone else appreciates me doing...

Although appropriate spiritual thought can help or heal, first make sure physical illness is ruled out. If your depression, and inablility to cope with stress, is accompanied by physical symptoms such as low grade fever, on and off intestinal difficulties, chronic neck pain, among too numerous to list other symptoms, you probably have the same virus 1 in 3 have. (It's from a vaccine,so you won't get help from doctors) The good news is we have found a mineral the drug companies won't tell you about. We will be in NC soon, and will soon have a website, to help rule out the physical epidemic problem. If you have no physical symptoms with your stress and depression, that would be a miracle. Start by celebraiting that miracle, you'll feel better as you grow wiser. We all must survive our ignorance, or die trying. Love and Peace, Estra (My mother named me"Estrella")Berosini

It's really hard to stop myself from a long line of puns about the word dogma; especially involving my Pomeranian. A possible cure for misery in Ashville is to spend 16 winters in Vermont; after that, a simple tropical documentary causes bliss. (I know it's relative, it's just the Ram Dass sit down comedy influence.)

But I bet you had more spiritual experiences and got rid of that tension that dattaswami speaks of. I spent a couple of years in Maine...

Spiritual Solution for Tensions and Anxiety
Realisation and repeated memorization of the true knowledge is the only one solution for this problem. The ignorance is responsible for all the anxiety and tensions. One should know that every one has climbed the time (Kala), which is the running train. Death is the station at which one has to get down. Then every one should face the Lord for the enquiry.
After the enquiry one will get either permanent happiness or permanent misery. The journey of this train to that station is the human life, which is only a fraction of second when it is compared to the infinite stream of time set up from the beginning of the creation. To think that the life is very long itself is ignorance. Every one is sitting in a closed compartment and realisation of the truth is the window through which every one should peep to find the infinite time stream. Only on such comparison the human life becomes a small fraction of a second. When the realization is absent and when there is no comparison the lifetime appears to be very long. First one should cross this illusion of time. Similarly, the illusion of the place. The earth looks very large under the ignorance.
But if one realises the infinite space of this universe the entire earth is a small fraction of a pinhead. Similarly one gets a comfortable seat and sits on it thinking that he is settled in the life. Another person is moving in the compartment in search of a comfortable seat and according to him he is not settled. But when both these people look out through the window, which is realisation of truth, then both realise that both are moving. Similarly one thinks that his co-passengers are his close relatives and is worried about them. But they get down at their respective stations and do not remember this fellow at all. Nobody remembers their relatives of his previous birth. If one realises that the so-called close relatives like parents, wife, children etc., are only the co-passengers who get down at their stations, he will not have any tension or anxiety about them. He does his duties without these two. Similarly when one thinks that he is his body itself, he feels that diseases damage him.
But if one realises that this body is only a dramatic dress needed for his role in the present drama, he is not worried about the damage of the body. He feels that as if his shirt is damaged. During the journey in the train one must constantly think about the interview and prepare for it. In such case he gets permanent happiness after the enquiry even though he is traveling in a comfortless third class compartment. If one forgets the interview and is attracted by the factors in the closed compartment, he is going to get permanent misery even if he travels by a first class compartment.
Thus, something is good according to the ignorant people and that is bad according to the realised scholars. This world is full of ignorant people and only very few realised scholars are present. Therefore the behaviour of a realised soul is criticized and mocked by the large public. But all the souls will realise the truth after the death when they face the enquiry. But it becomes too late by that time and nothing can be rectified. Thus, a realised scholar never cares for the public and proceeds in the true path decided by the true realisation. Only such true knowledge can remove the tensions and anxiety. The path of devotion can make you forget the pain temporarily for some time. It cannot remove the pain and anxiety on a permanent basis. No other methods like rituals, worships, etc., can solve this problem except the frequent memorization of the true knowledge. True knowledge is the comprehensive outlook of the whole situation i.e., realised by looking through the window of the train. Ignorance is the limited look inside the closed compartment, which is related to the comforts of seats and the bonds of co-passengers.

What is the final effect of desire? Is it God or misery?

The desire gives the fruit according to the direction. If you desire God, God is achieved. If you aspire bliss through worldly bonds, you will get misery.
