We're finishing up our first year of home schooling and realizing I need to do things differently next year. My children really need to be writing (not penmanship). Neither my 4th grader or 1st grader has done much writing this year. I've been looking at the new Sonlight LA. But a friend has been talking about CC. I'm concerned that CC will be too time consuming (I also have a 3 yr. old) My oldest will be going into 5th grade. She's not a strong reader and struggles with inferencing and drawing conclusions. I'm concerned that the Essentials program might overwhelm her. Then again, it might give her the skills she needs. The cost is also a bit overwhelming to me. Can anyone that has tutored tell me how much that helps with tuition costs? Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

If you are really interested in the program, then I would consider tutoring, if you can. I am planning to tutor next year and it seems to just make sense. For many reasons: I am going to be there anyway; I have to help my children with the lessons anyway; and from what I've been told and seen, depending on the size of your class it will pay for both of your children. You will help to bring something to the class others may not, and you will enhance your own homeschool efforts in the meantime. Pray about it and you will know if it is right for you.

This will be my second year tutoring and I have 3 kids in the program this year and I'll still be getting a little income. It depends on if your facility charges you or not -- ours doesn't. I enjoy tutoring, although I tutored two of my own last year and that did not work well. I recommend not tutoring your own kids if possible!
