Will there be a Tenor spot open next year?

As of now, we are not planning on having an opening this upcoming year. There will definitely be an opening the following year though.

I am curious to know what constitutes an audition at the Curtis Institute. Are a number of orchestral excerpts set to be prepared or does the auditionee turn up with his/her own selection showcasing the versatility in his/her playing? Is there a set concerto or work, or is there an element of own choice? Which etudes asked for, if so is there a set etude and an own choice? I am just curious as I have seen from my friend recently applying for schools in the US that for example Northwestern had a set audition will all works outlined with no choice in your audition repertoire whereas Julliard was more open ended in its guidlines and was a "design it urself" audition in terms of selecting works, etudes and excerpts. I was wondering whereabouts the Curtis Institute is in the whole "openess" of audition repertoire.

Sam, there is flexibility in selecting pieces for the audition. Here's the official wording from Curtis: "Auditions will be held for tenor trombone and/or bass trombone, depending on the opening. Applicants will play: (1) one complete concerto, sonata or other substantial solo work; (2) one technical étude by Kopprasch, Tyrell or Blazhevich; and (3) at least two orchestral excerpts of contrasting style. Applicants may be asked to play all major and minor scales and to read at sight in alto, tenor and bass clefs."

At this time, it looks like the next audition will be next year. I wouldn't plan on Curtis having an opening for this year.

Weston's new job begs a continued discussion of this topic...will Curtis fill the vacancy or go all of next year with only 2 tenors? Weston, will you complete your degree?

I have completed the requirements for my degree and will not be returning. The trombone faculty is still determining what they want to do for next year. Weston

I cant speak for Shachar or David, but when they leave is entirely up to them. They can stay until 2008 according to the rules of Curtis(correct me if Im wrong guys!). We really cant know for sure when the next opening will be unless David comes on here right after this and says there will be a spot after next year or something like that. Word of advice-dont worry about whether there will be an opening in 07. Worry about improving your playing. As long as you make yourself the best player you can be, the rest will come, whether you end up at Curtis or a state university.

To second what Weston said, no decision has been made. An audition IS coming up but the actual date yet to be determined. I'm sure the faculty will get the word out when the date's set, as they have with previous auditions.

Will the audition be for a regular, degree-seeking student, or just for a one-year sub, like you have on tuba right now? It seems to me that this is an awkward time to hold an audition, since high school seniors have already committed to other schools; I don't know what rules colleges have about transferring, but I would have thought it would be difficult at this point.

Tim, Auditions will be for full study at Curtis. There will be no one-year spots for trombone as there were for tuba. David

Any updates on the audition? I emailed the admissions department, but they have not gotten back to me. Thanks for your help.

There will be no audition this summer to fill the empty spot. The audition will take place during the normal audition time in the Winter. David

Hey guys, I was wondering if there is any likelihood of a bass trombone opening in the next few years, preferably 09-11. I am a junior, and looking at my future possibilities. Thanks!
