I own a Rocky Mountain Horse that has a tripping problem. She forges and I notice she lands her front feet toe first. She has always been barefoot. I'm sure this is what is causing her tripping but my farrier doesn't agree and he says he can't change her footfall by changing her trim. Do you have any advice? |

A hoof has 5 proprioceptors- nerve bundles in the hoof- that sense where each foot is in space and what the environment is. Your horse can absolutely develop a new footfall from trimming- I had a client whose horse forged so bad he had to be turned out in bell boots- when I took over his farrier care- I pulled his shoes (they were not needed) and gave him a good balanced trim- he no longer forges and is turned out 'naked'. Your horse may have a conformational issue- but many times a long toe and imbalanced hoof causes tripping and forging. I would seek a second opinion. http:// www.naturalfarrier.com natural hoof care, free tips, videos and advice. |
