It seems to me that all over long Island the music scene has died. People just do not go out like they used to to see a band. I don't think it's anything to do with the music, do you? Could it be DWI laws and smoking laws combined? ...WTF?...Any other ideas...puzzled. |

I think that people in their 20's do not enjoy seeing live bands as much as in the 70's and 80's and that it is the over-30-40 somethings that go out and enjoy cover bands. Bar owners want bands starting at 10 PM and most "older people" have baby sitting issues or do not want to go out at 10PM and be out til 2 AM. I think if bars started bands right after the happy hour 8PM more people would stay longer and come out to see a band. Owners need to adapt. This is what I have heard from people who want to come and see bands and have experienced personally. |

I agree with MB. For years , I would have much preffered to start playing around 8pm, instead of essentially eliminating a large portion of the crowd by starting past 10 pm. as a musician now in my 40's , it is almost impossible to consistantly get large crowds. |

I have played VFW gigs in other states and it is great 8-11pm gigs out the door and paid. You get a nice size of people at this time also!!I have also liked playing for older social groups. The 50 years old and older groups. They pay well, like to get up and dance and gigs are usually done by 11 or 12.Clubs either have to change it up or go out of business!! http://www.oshradio.com OSHRadio.com Promoting Independent Music |

people don't like live music because the bands don't entertain anymore. They get up there and just play and think thats enough. I will never forget seeing the Wallflowers open for the WHO because the crowes cancelled. The just stood there. It was so obvious that they did not come up through the bars... Like it or not you have to entertain. People go see bands several times if their entertained. You can't let yourself believe that your music is all you need. Your kidding yourself. Watch the big bands they entertain. I'm not necessarily a fan but BRUCE,Van Halen, Foo Fighters, Chilli peppers. Its an actual show and if bands like my own who have this same problem don't entertain no one is coming back. Your friends can only see you so many times.... bottom line!! http://www.myspace.com/indulgentlucie Myspace |

if ya ask me, ALL of you are pretty much nailing it right on the head...having been a part of the LI music scene for the last 8 years as a performer and a promoter, there are so many reasons why the music scene isnt what it could be....from bands that dont play well live to clubs that dont promote a show well, to the short attention spans of most clubgoers, there are tons of reasons why the music scene is a mess...all the reasons that all of you mention are extremely valid....i do however think that if all the cover bands and tribute bands would try and write some songs instead of sponging off other peoples catalogs, you would have a scene... many of the cover bands out there are usually comprised of older people in their 50's who are playing tired re-hashes of songs that are either played a million times on the radio (brown eyed girl, anyone?)or they are playing their 'interpretation' of what they think the song should sound like.....as for the tribute bands, dudes, give it up, you're NOT ozzy, lol....walking back and forth on stage mumbling to yourself does not a singer make, lol...and for the guitarists who are playing note by note renditions; you arent impressing anyone...WRITE a solo on your own and then we'll talk, lol...c |

In the 70's Disco,D.J's,Started migrating into the club scene, and slowly became the norm.I think people got numb to live music, and it was easier for the clubs to book a D.J.,pay the $75.00 or so and that was that.Remember THE ACTION HOUSE,RUMBOTTOMS,MAXIS.Bands need to be more proactive and club people need to demand LIVE BANDS. |
