Make no mistake about it! Casinos are hurting dance halls. They have the resources to hire bands from all over - local, regional and national. They provide great entertainment and some have small dance floors, and it’s FREE! But be aware that people who are going to casino entertainment are not going to their favorite dance halls......Myron Kelleher, iowadance.com http://www.iowadance.com |

I have been on both ends of the business - as a Ballroom owner and as a Bandleader. I agree that the casinos hurt the ballrooms and dancehalls. In my opinion it is because of taking the entertainment dollars out of people's wallets. Most people only have so much money that they can devote to entertainment each month. If that money is going in the slot machines it isn't going to admission at dances. I play with The Western Justice Band and we occasionally work at Riverside Casino and Prairie Meadows. We have met a number of people at the casinos who now follow us into the ballrooms and clubs. Through our advertising on our website, radio, email list and dance schedules we cross promote and bring dancers from one type of venue to the other. From the standpoint of a band/musician, You need to get work where ever it is available. If the casinos hire good bands and keep them in business it is good for the ballrooms and clubs - there may be more good bands around because of this. |
