I am a jazz pianist. I have a big trouble with my fingers. When I play piano, my first finger joints (count from fingertips) are easily bended and I have to pay much attention to curve my fingers and avoid being bended. A doctor told me that because of gene, some people's ligaments are not tense naturally. And he told me that ligament couldnˇ¦t be tenser by training. Have you ever heard of this kind of situation or any good pianist who has looser finger ligaments? Thank you very much, David

Dear David, Many pianists have loose ligaments. Your fingertip bending should not be a problem unless it is hurting you. Old style piano teachers worried about that, but it is not considered a bad thing now. See Louis Kentner's book "Piano" (Yehudi Menuhin Music Guides) pages 52 - 57. It may be that you are bending your fingers too much at the middle joint (using flexor digitorum superficialis) which would increase the bend at the fingertips. Read the article "Curved fingers and Tension" which you can get to from the home page of this site. That explains the co-ordination you can use to free the fingers and lessen the bending at the finger tips. Basically the fingers should flex at the main knuckle and open out a little at the other two joints in general finger passages. Look at the two power point shows on the Piano Teaching page for more information. I hope this is of some help. Good luck, Richard
