Hey, My 4th finger has started to crack when I play it and push down on the keys to play it this year and I'm wondering why and how to get rid of the cracking. It really makes me nervous to play because I really don't like when it does that. So if you know why it does this and have a remedy to make it go away, please reply here or email me! Thanks so much!!

Hi, I'm not a trained medic, so I would
advise you to see a physiotherapist -
hopefully one who is interested in
musicians' or sports problems. On line you
could try Dr Jamieson, who is a chiropractor.
His website is www.musicianshealth.com and
he has an "Ask the Doctor" section. He
seems to give thoughtful replies. My
amateur view is that cracking noises are
often caused by tendons snapping across a
bone from one position to another and are
not normally harmful. This is what causes
the clicking sounds reindeer make! Check
the angle of your hand when you play. If it is
tilted towards the little finger so that your
fourth finger tends to play on its side, the
extensor tendon may possibly be snapping
across the knuckle. Try tilting your hand so
that the back is more level and the finger
plays vertically into the key.
