I would really like to form a network of musicains who are suffering/have recovered from RSI type problems in relation to playing. I realise this is not an uncontentious term (have just read Dr Wyn Parry on the subject) but from personal experience and discussions with physiotherapists working in the field, I see it as a very real and distinct health issue. Playing places a huge demand on our muscular and nervous syestems. With good technique the stress of this demand is minimised. However, misuse, producing adverse tension, can create problems varying from pain to tremors to muscle spasm. But the "RSI factor" only really comes into play when the symptoms are ignored and the problem becomes chronic - a kind of ongoing over-sensitisation of the nervous system. Once in this condition, it is not simply misuse but any use(and not necessarily in playing) which can trigger the symptoms. In this respect the condition is not unlike ME. This is long already so I wont go into my owm history here, but I would be very interested to hear from anyone for whom this rings significant bells!

I think you have put the matter very clearly and I absolutely agree with what you say. I have a computer mouse finger problem that still rears up from time to time unless I'm careful. It's specific to computer use and doesn't affect my piano playing - thank goodness. I think you're right about the sensitisation.
I hope that others will read your comments and begin to form a community.
It's good to hear from you.
