Very informative site on Gould's tapping technique.
It is reminiscent of the Chinese martial art, where the actual power and strength is disposed at a split-second precision. One remains relaxed during the whole.
I have tried this idea in the past. I like to bring to attention that while it is very useful for the downward motion of the keys, it has little control over the release of the keys.
Leggiero playing is highly effective with this technique while fine legato playing would require more than tapping.
I wonder if this may perhaps explain Gould's preference of the leggiero sound.

Thanks for your comment. I do find though, that one can control the relase of the key as before without losing the benefits of tapping the downward stroke. My slowed down videos of Gould (yes, I know - how sad can you get!) suggest that he did this. The quick release would, however, be a useful exercise in using minimal energy in the fastest playing.
