Hi there, I have a question about my pinkies. I don't know what it is, but I find it's very difficult to maintain a curve in my pinkies--as soon as any pressure is applied, the most distant knuckle bends in sharply, and the two closer phalanges stay rigidly straight. After a little while, that knuckle in both my pinkies will get very sore. The only way to avoid this is to play with my pinkies absolutely flat--they just will not behave like my other fingers, which maintain a curve even when I allow the last two knuckles to unbend as I flex at the MCP joint. Are my pinkies just extremely weak, or am I missing a tendon connection to my middle phalanges in my pinkies? I can bend at each of the joints in my pinkies when I'm away from the piano, but as soon as I put pressure on my pinky, I find that trying to flex at the PIP joint only results in more bending at the DIP joint, so somehow it seems like the superficial flexor digitorum is being bypassed. I'd like to play without my pinkies being sore (which is only possible when I play with them flat), but I also hear from various sources that pinkies should stay curved just like the other fingers. What is the right pinky technique? Are my pinkies abnormal?
