I think when we all have the easter break this year we should all get together and do something. Its always good fun to see everyone and we should make sure we always keep in touch. I hope everyone is well. |

Hello Allan! I've been reading your posts on this message board, and I'm glad you've enjoyed looking at some of the photos! I made this site, adn got it online about a month after the cinema closed it's doors for the last time. On the last day, I took as many photos as I could, and most of them are now on this site. . I worked at the Robins (in Bath for years and years, and as far as I recall, there was nearly always the threat of us closing down. Each year, we were told it would be the following year, over and over again! . Over the years there were two different plans in the town to build a multiplex cinema, but neither of these earlier plans came to anything. There is now a new multiplex in the town (which opened in the latter part of last year), but although it was undoubtedly a part of the reason for the Robins closure, it wasn't the main reason. For a good few years, the Theatre Royal (which was next door to the cinema in Bath) were costantly trying to raise funds to buy the cinema bulding to expand their facilities. They were also awaiting for a national lottery grant to help ensure they could afford such a venture. Eventually, they got the money they needed from somewhere, and finally took over ownership of the building. As far as I recall, we had 6 months notice of the closure date (or was it 3? My memory has gone). . The Theatre is building a youth theatre in the ex-cinema building. I guess you have looked in the updates section of this site? I put up a few pictures of the building in various states of destruction last year. I haven't added anything else for a while, simply because the progress on the building has hardly changed (well, externally anyway. I have no idea what's going on inside). If you haven't clicked on the FUTURE button on this site before, then you may find it of interest. It links directly to the Theatre Royal's own site for their youth theatre project (weirdly called 'The Egg') and on their site, you can find their own photos of the building being gutted and rebuilt (although there's not much rebuilding yet!). . It was interesting to hear you say that you feel your job at the Robins cinema was the best you've ever had. I have done a few different jobs since the cinema in Bath closed down, and they have only re-enforced my feeling that I am unlikely to ever get another job that I will enjoy as much as working at the cinema. I agree with you all the way! |

Just quickly checked the Theatre Royal's site myself, and they have updated their 'Hard Hat Report' with some more photos! Click the link below to go straight to the page. http://www.theatreroyal.org.uk/theegg/hardhatjanuary.html January 2005 Robins Cinema conversion pics |

At the cinema there were two Davids! But I guess you are asking me now? I was always known as Dave, and the other David was known as David.... so I thought you were asking him (not that you would know about any of that). The posts from David on this message board are not mine. . Anyway, I worked there for years... started as an usher, sweets salesperson... then learnt to project, did that for a few years, then became assistant manager (but still did a bit of projecting now and again). |
