Author Topic:   Shout out to Robins Durham!

Hi fellow Robins! How interesting it was to do a random search for Robins Cinemas to find this little gem of a site. I used to work for Robins in Durham until it closed in January 2003 (a very sad day!!) Looking at your pictures and stories, and having visited Robins Camberley (we were the last big three, remember the days of the flash website when the robin would flutter down with 'Bath... Camberley... Durham' Oh those were the days!! Haha) it seems that they were all alike in their greatness. When we were bored at Durham we'd sometimes ring up you nice people at Bath and Camberley and pretend to be customers (sounds childish I know. Haha) so sorry if that happened to be you on shift, distracted from your magazine reading or idle chatter by some strange sounding phone customer trying to disguise a northern accent and winding you up. I keep meaning to create a lil website with some pics of the old Durham site, now it's over two years since it's demise. Also, we're thinking of campaigning to get 'robins' in the dictionary, has any ex-robins employee been to places or seen something and said "Oh how Robins!" or "That's very Robinsy!"?. Lest we forget, the Robin lives on in us all!!!

I have many a time looked at things and thought how like robins they were, not sure it is used as often by the people who weren't fortunate enough to work for robins though...

Yeah you're probably right. And if it is used by people who didn't work for Robins, they probably use it negatively, ie. to emphasise how run down something is. Haha. The buggers.
Good to see you people still have regular get-togethers. We kept it up for about 10 months or so before people's new jobs and moving away to uni etc got in the way. When the Walkabout (which they criminally turned Robins into!) opened we all met up in force and caused havoc by rearranging their furniture to suit our large group, basically moaning about how they'd ruined the building etc, and we bought as few drinks as possible. The seduction of alcohol did however overcome our desire to boycott the place. Such fickle souls. We did however manage to get the DJ to play a Robins anthem and dedicate it to us, and he did, but the cheeky, eh, so-n-so, made some cocky remark about us crying into our drinks. It always fills me with joy whenever I visit Durham these days and see that the building facade is rapidly deteriorating to the grubby state of it's cinema days. I'm posting a link (albeit reluctantly!) to the Walkabout website which features a picture of Robins in it's current guise. Until I get my Robins Durham site online (hopefully this summer when I'm off uni - I'll keep you posted!) you'll have to imagine the following when looking at the pic. The clean sandstone was a bit grey and grubby, where it says 'Australian Bar' there was a bright red 'ROBINS CINEMAS' neon with a white neon line highlighting the arch. Where the Walkabout logo is above the doors, the Robins readograph used to be, which caused much amusement when it needed changing on a Thursday night, clambering up a rickety set of ladders playing around with hook-on letters trying to space it just right whilst battling with the cold northernly elements! The walls at either side of the doors used to hold four poster frames with details of what was showing. As the main entrance is stepped, wheelchair access to the two downstairs screens was only through the dingy/grimy fire exit which was obviously a welcoming sight to disabled patrons! Haha. Anyway, enough of my rant...

Walkabout (Robins) Durham - Feel free to send abusive emails. Just joking, that's morally wrong ;o)
