Sarah and I crossed paths on a number of occasions. She's not someone I knew well, but who I admired a great deal. Her sister, Lee, was a friend of mine in college at UW-Madison. They, like me, were from Minneapolis and when I knew Sarah, she was in San Francisco. I'd also gotten to know her mom because you can't know Sarah and not her mom. They lived in my neighborhood, as well.
My first year at SXSW in 1998, I spent hanging out with Sarah a great deal, long conversations about the state of the world in women's media, about indie rock, about film. At the time, I was the co-founder of Maxi, a pop-culture feminist webzine, and there was a lot of crossover.
I'm so glad that Sarah was here to fuck things up, as she put it, and that she shook up the world in the best way possible. My heart goes out to her family and her love.
