At the March meeting of the University Council, the group agreed to provide input via a discussion forum on what should be the focus of the Council for 2004-2005. The following suggestions were made:

1. Support a professional development retreat for pre-service teachers.

2. Continue to support leadership development efforts that are currently initiated through IOES.

3. Continue to support efforts to identify and address professional development and training needs of provisionally-certified teachers in Illinois.

Please respond by either adding additional suggestions or commenting on one or more of the above three suggestions. Thanks, Sylvia

We have several possibilities for projects that could be carried out as part of the scope of work of the University Council. Here are a few:1. Align our efforts with goals of the ICCB. For example, we could take on a project that focused on enhancing instruction in community colleges. Specifically, we might focus on the online learning environment. This could involve either teaching, learning, and/or evaluation. 2. A large number of educational administrators will be retiring in the next 5 years. We could host a small project that pertained to developing specific types of educational administrators, such as vocational education system directors.3. Illinois continues to have a shortage of minority teachers and administrators. We could develop a model or run a pilot project on recruiting and retaining minority teachers and/or administrators.4. Private technical colleges and trade schools seem to be growing exponentially in Illinois. We could write a white paper on collaboration between private and public efforts in vocational and technical education. 5. Chaos seems to reign within state agencies and organizations because of repercussions of the State budget. Perhaps we should host a symposium or retreat with representatives of various stakeholders present to build scenarios for career and technical education in Illinois. We have many options. Why not think big?Gene

Thanks Gene, for you reply. I totally agree that we should "think big."
