After reading Mon. & Tues. devotions and then the commentaires it reminds me of how in our everyday lives whether at home, work, school, or in our own church the people you are surrounded by can have such a positive or negetive effect on you. It can be easy to fall into the same pattern of other peoples criticizisms. Why is it so easy to find fault in others and want everyone to know but when they do something good nothing is mentioned about it? I know we don't always have to be praised for everything we do but a kind word goes a long way. It's like if you start hanging around with people like that you find yourself talking the same way and always finding fault in others. We forget that sometimes we all do things wrong or sometimes say something that's not appropriate and though usually not intentional you just hope other people will be understanding and forgiving. I've tried to make a better effort at standing up for people when I feel they are being criticized and not going along with what others are saying. Sometimes it can be so hard to say "I don't agree with you", and stick up for others and I wonder why? I'm so thankful I have a forgiving Lord. |

I think you are right, and I think there is a certain amount of human nature that sees the bad more than the good. Part of the witness of the Bible is the grumbling of God's people, and the consequences it has meant for them. But consider also some of the reading from previous weeks- Job asks (reading for Feb. 7, Job 2:10 "Shall we indeed accept good from God, and shall we not accept adverstiy?" Eli when confronted with the destruction by God according to the words of Samuel (his young servant) replies "It is the Lord. Let Him do what seems good to Him." (Feb. 19 1 Samuel 3:18) I think too often we tend to seek the approval of people instead of God - it is why we have a hard time standing up for what we believe, because we are afraid people won't like us for it (and they probably won't). But we need to find contentment in doing what God wants us to do and accepting what happens confident in God's care. (And yes, much, much, easier said than done.) |
